JBHS ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT, JUNE/2024/PRIDE MONTH

LAWRENCE (LEROY) POWELL, JBHS CLASS OF 2002

Lawrence at JBHS in the play,

Crazy For You.

Lawrence (Leroy) is on the right.

Earthshot 2022

Jason, Leroy's partner, is to the right of Mayor Wu and Leroy is next to him in the hat.

In 2020, Prince William established the Earthshot Prize in order to change the global discourse about climate and environment, from one of pessimism and gloom to one of optimism and hope. It is quite an honor to attend the Earthshot Awards. Leroy and Jason were guests of Mayor Wu since Jason is her stylist.

This is Leroy and his partner, Jason, in their wonderful Newbury Street salon. Leroy is on the left and to the left of him you can catch a view of some of his artwork.

In the words of Lawrence (Leroy) Powell:
I have wonderful memories of Barlow. I was an art kid and a theatre/chorus kid. And there was such an incredible community there. Academically, top classes that stand out are Kilbourne’s Children’s Lit (the best conversations I ever had with a teacher) and Environmental Biology with Norris (learning wilderness skills in the woods behind school).
After graduating from JBHS in 2002, I went on to Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA, and got my Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree; Class of ‘06. That’s how I ended up in Massachusetts. I discovered a love of doing hair while at art school; I had some creative folks to experiment on! Soon after I graduated, I realized I wanted to pursue a career as a hair stylist.
As luck would have it, I ended up marrying a hair stylist! I had worked in a few salons in Jamaica Plain while Jason had worked at several different spots in Boston. In 2019, we received an invitation to check out new salon suites being developed on Newbury Street, and we knew we had to leap at the opportunity.
We created Powell & Burke, a full service hair salon located at 207 Newbury St, in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay (PowellandBurke.com). And this year, we were awarded a ‘Boston Common Magazine Best of Beauty’ award!
We’ve dedicated a wall in the salon as my own art gallery, showcasing my mixed media paintings, done in acrylic and cut paper collage (GoLeroy.com). And this summer, you can see an exhibition of my work at the Old Schwamb Mill Gallery, 17 Mill Lane, in Arlington, MA (OldSchwambMill.org)!
Congratulations, Leroy, to both you and Jason. It is quite a feat to get salon space on Newbury Street in Boston. Congratulations on your award from Boston Common Magazine and what an honor for you and Jason to be guests of the Mayor at the Earthshot Awards. Thank you for being our June Spotlight and for sharing your life with us.
