Greetings!
Happy New Year! I hope everyone's holidays were filled with family and friends, laughter and good food! As we settle back into work life or whatever routine it may be, I hope we can take some time to think about what we are hopeful for this coming year. Personally, I'm just hoping to not epic fail this whole "new mom" thing in the spring!
Here at PCAP we are continuing to plan the 2017 Native Prairie Restoration and Reclamation Workshop! Just over one month left, seriously where has the time gone?! Registration is open for the workshop that is taking place on February 8-9 in Regina.
The draft program is also available on our website and check back often as the program will be updated often as more presenter details are confirmed.
Topics include everything from soil remediation, range health, prescribed burning, restoration for wildlife and plant species at risk, to aquatic species, industrial mitigation, as well as presentations about collaboration and the power of partnerships. NPRRW 2017 has so much to offer, including a poster session, a trade show, and numerous networking opportunities! Sponsorship opportunities are also available and offer some great new and improved benefits. For poster session, trade show and sponsorship information, please visit the workshop website.
In December, PCAP attended Foraging Into the Future in Swift Current and met with producers and other agricultural experts to chat about the importance of native prairie conservation. Also in December, Al Smith from Nature Saskatchewan gave an in-person presentation about the preliminary results of the International Piping Plover Census in Saskatchewan as part of our Native Prairie Speaker Series. The presentation was recorded and you can watch it here.
On January 23rd, Ryan Fisher from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment will be giving a webinar about current land cover and species-habitat modelling initiatives. This is sure to be a popular presentation so register quickly!
Have a wonderful week everyone. Feel free to drop me a line about anything and everything, I would love to hear from you. See you at NPRRW!

Whooping Cranes make an Appearance Near the Queen City
Photos taken by Danny Nixon of Earl Grey, SK
These cranes were spotted 3 miles north of the village of Earl Grey in a
field in the spring of 2016.
The areas around Earl Grey and Southey have
very high wetland density and many other waterfowl use these wetlands as
their nesting and breeding grounds.
Whooping Cranes are designated as an endangered species under the Species at Risk Act in Canada. The natural global population of Whooping Cranes nest in the Wood Buffalo National Park. They migrate south to winter along the Texas Gulf Coast. They are sometimes spotted in groups of two or three en route.

Pasture Tech - an innovative satellite imagery program may be coming to a ranch near you!
An organization called PastureTech is looking at the feasibility of using remote sensing to measure and potentially predict pasture production tailored for individual ranches. This may have implications related to production insurance (i.e. crop insurance) or assist ranchers in carefully planning the use of their resources. Pilot testing has taken place at a few ranches across Alberta and they are looking to expand research into Saskatchewan. For more information on the program, click to read this fact sheet or visit www.pasturetech.com
PastureTech is also working on a hydrology project that will address methods to mitigate against flooding and droughts.
