A Note from the Director

Dear Families,

We were excited to celebrate a first this past week - our first-ever career fair for students. Our staff partnered with volunteers from the community to create a realistic career fair that exposed high school students to a variety of professional fields. Our deepest thanks to those who volunteered their time. Scroll down to read all about it and see photos.

We hope many of you will register for another fantastic opportunity for conversation and learning at the second lecture in our Professional Collaborative's Spring Lecture Series. This Wednesday, April 24, Ivymount's Kelly Offutt will lead a discussion around Talking about Sexual Health with Individuals with Developmental Disabilities. Such an important topic and one that will benefit from hearing about the experiences and questions of fellow parents. RSVP at the link below.

Also, a reminder to get your order in this week for Mother's Day and Staff Appreciation cards handcrafted by Aspire High School students. See the form below.

Have a nice evening.

Sincerely,

Susan Holt

2024 Spring Workshop Series

Join the Ivymount Professional Collaborative in person at Ivymount on Wednesday, April 24 from 6-7 pm for the second workshop in our Spring Lecture Series, Talking about Sexual Health with Individuals with Developmental Disabilities. In celebration of April's Autism Acceptance and Advocacy Month, this session will support attendees in exploring opportunities to increase access to this important information for autistic and neurodiverse individuals.

Kelly Offutt, Program Services Specialist and Speech Therapist, will provide information about sexual health related to school-age individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Expect to learn new ways to discuss these matters openly and comprehensively. Plus, ask questions and chat with fellow attendees.

Final Days to Order Handmade Cards

Mother’s Day and Teacher Appreciation Week will be here soon. Spread some love to the mothers and teachers in your life with a card or note handcrafted by students! Each Mother’s Day card comes prepackaged with an envelope and is only $1.00 each! Teacher Appreciation notes are $0.50 each and are blank on the back so you can write a personalized note to a staff member of your choice.

Fill out the form and send in with your students by Wednesday, April 24. Emailed orders will not be accepted. Order forms have been sent home in backpacks the past three Fridays.

Students Explore Professional Futures at Career Fair

Ivymount School’s Aspire High School Program introduced the first-ever career fair for students last week. Seventeen professionals volunteered their morning, answering questions from Endeavors and Aspire students. Staff, including Jennie Kampf, Melissa Dogum, Alyssa Yeager, Victoria Keenan, Julia Donovan and Jennifer Kent worked for several weeks to organize the fair and help students prepare by discussing different careers and creating question lists the students could use to interview the professionals. We spoke with Jennie Kampf, Aspire Program Director, to learn more about this unique opportunity for students to explore their professional future.

Celebrating Autism Acceptance and Advocacy Month

Asking for a squishy ball or a stuffed animal, taking deep breaths, going on walks, being surrounded by friends…these are just some of the strategies Ivymount School students employ to help them stay focused at school. Watch the full video created by AdLit.org here as we continue to honor Autism Acceptance and Advocacy this month.

How to Get Involved

The Ivymount PTA is planning activities during National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6 - 10, to show the more than 200 Ivymount School staff how much we appreciate their dedication and commitment to working with our children and young adults on a daily basis.

Week's schedule:

  • Saturday-Sunday May 4-5: Swing by the school with your student at your leisure over the weekend to "Chalk The Walk" using sidewalk chalk to create thank you messages and art
  • Monday May 6: Grab N' Go Snack bar for staff
  • Tuesday May 7: Students wear Ivymount spirit wear or green clothing
  • Wednesday May 8: Luncheon for the staff
  • Thursday May 9:  "I appreciate you" notes, pictures, etc. for staff from students
  • Friday May 10: Staff favorite "Dress Comfy/Pajama Day"

We hope every family can find a way to participate:

Donate Gift Cards

You can donate gift cards ($10-$25) for use at local businesses, such as restaurants, movie theaters, or stores, for the daily Staff Raffles. Gift cards can be sent to school with students in envelopes marked “PTA Raffle” starting on Monday, April 29 through arrival on Thursday, May 2.

Donate Snacks

You can provide boxes or bags of nut-free snacks and treats for staff to pick up from a Grab-and-Go Snack Bar. Individually-wrapped or individually-packaged snacks and treats are preferred, but not required. In addition to store-bought snacks and treats, homemade snacks and baked goods are welcome. If possible, individually package homemade items for easier distribution.

Snacks should be labeled “PTA Snack Bar” and can be sent to school with students or dropped off. Send in snacks starting on Wednesday, May 2 through arrival on Monday May 6.

Volunteer Your Time

Volunteers are needed to help set up the Staff Grab ‘n Go Snack Bar on the afternoon of May 6 and to help with the Staff Appreciation Luncheon on Wednesday, May 8.
