For Yarn's Sake

A crawl for the ages! No pandemic. Beautiful, sunny weather (at least for a few days). And more amazing makers than we could ever have imagined. We had sooooooo much fun. Merci beaucoup to all of you wonderful crawlers for making the 2024 Rose City Yarn Crawl an event we'll remember for years to come.

Sad that it's over? No worries - you can relive it on YouTube. Natalie (aka Knitty Natty) joined us with cameraman in tow, making the rounds to all eight shops.

Watch the video HERE.

And the Winners Are . . .

Congratulations to our five lucky prize winners. But heck, we're all winners, having just spent a long weekend rubbing elbows with fellow fiber enthusiasts, and surrounding ourselves with the things we love.

Rainbow Pride and Ombre Mini Bundles

Did you miss the Neighborhood Fiber Co.'s trunk show? Well you're in luck. All of the wonderful mini skein sets are hanging out with us just a little bit longer, catching a plane back to Baltimore on March 24th. Nab yours before they fly away home!

Neighborhood Fiber Co.'s Mini Bundles are made up with their GOTS-certified organic merino wool bases, and available in three different weights! 5 mini skeins (60 grams each) in either the colors of the rainbow or a lovely gradient set. Oh baby, the beautiful colors!

What to make? One set is enough for a shawl pattern, like Olga Buraya Kefelian's Aranami, or Skeinanigans' Rock Candy Mountain. Or combine the mini's with full skeins of a complementing color for garments, such as Joji Locatelli's Fading Lines, and accessories like Melanie Berg's The Joker and the Thief. The possibilities are endless!

Rainbow Pride and Ombre Mini Bundles are available in the following bases:

Organic Rustic Fingering (single ply): 1500 yards (approx. 250 yards per 60g mini)

Organic Studio Sock: 1260 yards (approx. 210 yards per 60g mini)

Organic Studio DK: 820 yards (approx. 137 per 60g mini)

Organic Studio Worsted: 500 yards/ 10.6 oz. (Approximately 100 yards/ 60g skein.)

Profits from sales of all Neighborhood Fiber Rainbow Pride Mini Bundless are split between four incredible organizations in the intersectional struggle against homophobia, transphobia, racism, and police violence: Baltimore Safe Haven, My Sistah's House (based in Karida's hometown of Memphis, TN), Campaign Zero, and Baltimore United for Change.

We were so very sad that Karida wasn't able to join us this year as planned. Just as she was getting ready to board a plane to Portland, she tested positive for that nasty little bug that's turned our world topsy turvy - COVID. In good conscience, she could not travel, nor be here in person. Next Year! Watch her message to us, and learn all about Neighborhood Fiber Co. HERE.

Discover the greatest approach to sock knitting! Knitting socks from the toe up makes the most of your yarn, and allows you to try it on along the way, thus giving a perfect fit every time. Best of all, no grafting! Even the most reluctant sock knitter will become a toe-up nut. In this 2-class series, we’ll teach you everything you need to know about knitting amazing toe-up socks. Knitters will learn Judy’s Magic Cast-On, the why's, what's and how's of the "need-not-be-intimidating" gusset and heel flap, and an amazingly stretchy bind-off. Students must know how to cast on, knit, purl, increase and decrease. Experience with knitting cuff down socks is recommended, but not required.

Supplies you’ll need. US 1(2.5mm) 40” circular needle; 100 grams light colored fingering weight yarn, locking stitch marker. Vanilla Toe-Up Sock pattern is included in the class fee, and will be provided on the first day of class.

This is a 2-part in-person class. $75, plus supplies.

Knit, Love, Brioche!

Brioche Pastiche

Brioche Knitting is easier in the round than flat, and even easier when using two colors rather than one. In this 2-hour beginners' brioche class, you'll learn basic brioche rib as the beginning of a simple headband or cowl. Then Michele will introduce increases and decreases to make a leafy pattern, but only if you want to. Once we get started, you choose the pattern - plain or leafy, hat or cowl. You'll also learn how to fix common mistakes in brioche knitting.

Prerequisite skills. This is a beginners' brioche class. Students should know how to knit and purl, cast on and bind off, and work in the round.

Supplies you'll need. One light colored and one dark colored worsted weight yarn, 100 yards each; US 6 circular needle - 16" for hat, or 24" for cowl; 1 stitch marker to mark beginning of round; Brioche Pastiche pattern (available for purchase on Ravelry; discount code included in class handout).

Prior to class homework. With darker color, loosely cast on for hat or cowl using long tail cast on method (refer to pattern for cast on stitch numbers). Join to work in the round, then knit one round. Bring yarn to the front of your work.

This is an in-person class. Once enrolled, you'll receive an email with the class handout and discount code for your pattern. $55, plus supplies.
