The New CIA

China, India, and ASEAN

“The growth, especially in the next 10-20 years, will come from the new CIA- China, India, and ASEAN.”

Why have we seen more changes in the last 30 years than we have seen in human history?

During his presentation on the stage of PATA - GBTA APAC Travel Summit, Kishore Mahbubani explained from a geopolitical perspective:

How the contest between the US and China will shape Asia Pacific

How ASEAN is playing a critical role among the new rising powers

Why the travel industry will continue to thrive and more.

Recording is available for PATA Members and event delegates. Read more session highlights from the event: https://bit.ly/3vsNEpv

Kishore Mahbubani is a Singaporean diplomat and geopolitical consultant who served as Singapore Permanent Representative to the UN and President of the UN Security Council, and he is also the Founding Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore (NUS).

New Covid-19 Guidelines

The Biden administration, fearful that a surge of coronavirus infections in Beijing could spawn a new and more dangerous variant, announced on Wednesday that it will require travelers from China, including Hong Kong and Macau, to present negative Covid-19 tests before entering the United States.

The requirement will take effect on Jan. 5, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which made the announcement. C.D.C. officials said the requirement for testing will apply to air passengers regardless of their nationality and vaccination status. It will also apply to travelers coming from China who enter the United States through a third country, or who connect through the United States to other destinations. Italy and Japan have already imposed similar restrictions, and India has mandated negative Covid-19 test reports and random screening at airports for passengers arriving from China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand.

Some experts questioned whether the testing requirement would do any good — especially given the surge in cases in some parts of the United States. In the northeast, scientists say virus spread is being fueled by an Omicron subvariant, XBB, which appears to be spreading more quickly than ones related to the dominant variant in Beijing.

Best Wishes

Dear Elizabeth, Joebert and All

Glad you enjoyed a fun and delicious Holiday party. Glad we did not attempt to make it. Too much on our plate after a long absence.

We had an outage in Putnam Valley from Friday 6pm to Sunday 3am. Very long time. …

All good wishes.

Simone and Ray

Hello Elizabeth,

… I would like to wish you and the PATA family a very healthy and Happy New Year and much success for 2023. As a past Chairman and Board member for many years, PATA has been an integral part of my life that I will never forget. In my term as Chairman, we were awarded 2 Awards by PATA HQ and I went to Malaysia to receive them. I did hand over both awards to Simone and trust they are in safe custody with whoever will be responsible for them.

Wish you all the very best!

Warm regards from sunny Florida,

Pallan Katgara

Past Chairman & PATA NY Board member

Gastronomy Cambodia

Congrats, Cambodia was awarded the World's Best Rice 2022 at the World Rice Conference (WRC)! This contest demonstrates Southeast Asia's dominance in producing the best rice in the world, as evidenced by the best rice in the world winners: Thailand was victorious seven times, Cambodia five times, and Myanmar and Vietnam once each.

Cambodian premium rice being recognized as one of the finest fragrant rice, this variety shares aromatic scent, and perfection in taste and tenderness as Thais Hom Malis Rice, which is harvested once a year from early of November to mid of January in northwestern part of the country and in Kampong Speur province. Jasmine Rice is renowned for its delightful taste, fluffiness and soft mouth feel. This classic rice variety is defined by its long, slender grains and its delicate fragrance.

Agriculture, led by rice production, represents approximately one third of Cambodia’s GDP and employs 80 percent of the population. The use of a phrase meaning “white gold” to describe the grain in Cambodia reflects its economic and cultural importance.

Outside of Southeast Asia, only the United States won this competition twice.

Destination Harbin, Heilongjiang

Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang, China’s northernmost province. The city grew in the late 19th century with the influx of Russian engineers constructing the eastern leg of the Trans-Siberian Railroad. The city's Russian architecture includes its green-domed Saint Sophia Cathedral, an Eastern Orthodox church now a local history museum.

The Jewish people who settled in Harbin were granted better status than were the Jews in Russia. The first Jewish cemetery in China was opened in Harbin in 1903, which later had more than 2,000 tombs. The Jewish community was sharply increased by the influx of Jewish refugees during World War I, the Russian revolution (1917), and Russian Civil war.

The yearly spectacular Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival gives it the unofficial title "Ice City." Every day since early December, tens of thousands of ice blocks have been prized out of the river and moved by truck to the venue of Harbin's annual winter festival, where they are used to build life-sized castles, pagodas, bridges and even a functioning hotpot restaurant. Ice from the river is essential. It's an awesome Ice Festival.

Best Wishes for a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year!!
