Suzanne, a valued and amazing patient, is holding a jar of tonifying elixir that we started brewing more than 6 months ago! Elixers are widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for enhancing longevity—the herbs used strengthen the body and tonify qi. I make elixirs using packets of dried herbs from Urban Herbs steeped in clear alcohol. Alcohol is essential to the process of making tinctures—it allows the extraction of vital, medicinal plant properties like alkaloids, oils and resins that aren’t water-soluble. Don’t worry, the amount of alcohol you intake in one dose is very minimal—around 1/40th that found in one glass of wine.
To make an elixir, the herbal packet is steeped in alcohol for several weeks to several months, before it is ready. I usually let the mixture sit for at least 6 months before straining out the herbs, and trying my first dose! The herbs in these elixirs boost the spleen, liver and kidneys for lifelong health and increased vitality.
We carry more than 10 types of elixirs which I frequently prescribe to patients needing a boost. At your next appointment, ask me which elixir might be right for you, or try making your own elixir at home with herbal packets available at the Acupuncture by Andrea office.
