Tending To Your Health

Most of us live much of our lives trying to manage a situation that is not optimal. We know we’re not living the ideal, we tell ourselves we can do it, but we end up finding we are not set up for a healthy life full of growth.

Setting long-term goals for our future should include our health and how we think we’d like to feel in the decades to come. Youth and the health you now have will unfortunately not last forever.

Traditional Chinese Medicine focuses on your overall health and constitution so that you have a solid foundation from which to fight off sickness. Learn more about taking care of yourself now to ensure future health in our latest blog article.

La Dolce Vita

We've got an incredible new line of healing products available at Acupuncture by Andrea. Sourced from the farmlands of Puglia, Italy, these plant-based medicinals are derived from the combination of herbal tradition and modern science. Using an innovative, patented technique, active ingredients in plants are extracted, separated, and recombined for optimal health enhancement.

I'm learning more about the power of these natural products and how best to recommend them to you to replace pharmaceutical medications, when possible. We will be hosting a workshop soon to present this alternative and effective new plant-based medicine to all of you.

Extracting the Essentials

Suzanne, a valued and amazing patient, is holding a jar of tonifying elixir that we started brewing more than 6 months ago! Elixers are widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for enhancing longevity—the herbs used strengthen the body and tonify qi. I make elixirs using packets of dried herbs from Urban Herbs steeped in clear alcohol. Alcohol is essential to the process of making tinctures—it allows the extraction of vital, medicinal plant properties like alkaloids, oils and resins that aren’t water-soluble. Don’t worry, the amount of alcohol you intake in one dose is very minimal—around 1/40th that found in one glass of wine.

To make an elixir, the herbal packet is steeped in alcohol for several weeks to several months, before it is ready. I usually let the mixture sit for at least 6 months before straining out the herbs, and trying my first dose! The herbs in these elixirs boost the spleen, liver and kidneys for lifelong health and increased vitality.

We carry more than 10 types of elixirs which I frequently prescribe to patients needing a boost. At your next appointment, ask me which elixir might be right for you, or try making your own elixir at home with herbal packets available at the Acupuncture by Andrea office.

One Day or Day One: You Decide

Lifestyle changes can be tough to make. We all have such busy lives, it’s difficult to confront the idea of making changes let alone doing so. A significant part of what I do during a treatment session or consultation is encourage my patients to make a shift. I can almost see the wheels turning and the barriers coming up alongside thoughts of “I don’t have free time now, how can I add anything in?!” My response is always the same—One day at a time. Try one new approach to make a daily change and see if your life is improved. What if that one change made everything else in your life fall into place? I’ve seen it happen!

We can ponder and plot and procrastinate about the most opportune time for change, or we can START NOW!
