June is PRIDE Month and National Men's Health Awareness Month

June is an important month for awareness, as we look to extend acceptance and compassion to our friends and family who are members of the LGBTQIA+ community while also remembering to check in on the health and wellness of the men in our loves--dads, husbands, brothers, and sons. Attend a PRIDE event as an ally, advocate for equals rights and recognition, or support LGBTQIA businesses. At the same time, pick up the phone and check in the men in our lives and urge them to get checked out, go for the routine physical they've put off, or get outside and start being active. June is a busy month but it's never too late to take action in the lives of our loved ones.

Tips for a happy and healthy summer

With the onset of summer, Juniper would like to share some tips on how to have a safe and healthy season.

1.Stay hydrated.

This may seem obvious, but it's easy to underestimate how hydrated you are. First, aim for around THREE liters of water every day (a little more for males, a bit less for females) and avoid alcohol and caffeine---both of which will cause you to lose even more water.

2.Be sun safe.

Wearing SPF 30 or higher sunscreen--or a moisturizer that contains SPF--anytime you're going out in the sun is extremely important, especially in our elderly community. With years of sun exposure comes years of accumulated skin damage, so protecting yourself--especially at the sun's strongest from 11am to 3pm--is crucial to lowering your risk of wrinkles, brown spots, or worse.

3.Understand heat stress related illness.

You might have heard of heat exhaustion before, but what about heat stroke? When your body temp rises to 104 or higher, it can require emergency treatment or serious, permanent damage can occur to the brain, kidneys, or more. Pay attention to symptoms like: confusion, nausea, rapid breathing and heart rate, among others, as your body temperature rises. These are all warning signs that need to cool down quickly and immediately.
