December 2023 - Issue 17

Dear students,

You made it to Winter Break! Congratulations!!

This down time is a great time to reflect on all you have accomplished this semester. Think about where you started – how you felt, what you knew and what you didn’t know. And now, just a few months later, what skills have you developed? What are you most proud of? Who have you met that has made your life better during this time? Are you feeling more like a member of the medical profession, now that you have completed this block of learning and skill development? Take the time to congratulate yourself for persevering and doing the work to mold yourself into the type of physician you aspire to be.

Now, take some time OFF – time to relax, enjoy yourself, catch up on sleep and fun activities, and to NOT think about school. Focus on your loved ones and enjoying time with those who fill you up emotionally. You deserve this break time!

Happy holidays, and we look forward to seeing you in 2024!

Congratulations Jose Malavet, MS3 - USF Health Culture Coin Recipient!

On December 5th Dr. Zwygart presented Jose with the Culture Coin for 'for promoting compassion and selfless service when a member of the MCOM community needed it."

According to the nomination write-up, when a member from MCOM was diagnosed with stage-four cancer and their insurance would not cover the cost of chemotherapy, Jose rallied to help raise funds to offset medical expenses.

Due to his efforts and calls to action, this MCOM colleague entered a cancer-treatment program.

Tampa Bay Street Medicine Needs Your Help

Tampa Bay Street Medicine is a medical student-run organization associated with the Morsani College of Medicine, providing clinical care, hygiene supplies, and food to homeless people and refugees of our surrounding communities. Every month, TBSM provides hygiene supplies to more than 200 individuals. To help ensure TBSM has the supplies it needs to operate, its student director has created an Amazon Wish List to allow donors to contribute while knowing that donated supplies will reach their intended destination.

To contribute supplies to Tampa Bay Street Medicine, supporters can purchase from this Amazon Wish List. When donating supplies via this Amazon list, please choose the address destination associated with Emily Heideman.

Many of you may know Mr. Chris Levoy, one of the security guards at MDD.

"Since I've been a first year at MCOM I've had the chance to know Chris very well, he's a kind person who's nice to not just myself, but other students at MCOM and staff. Recently he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and unfortunately, his insurance won't cover his chemotherapy. He has been in touch with Medicaid for help but it's a daunting process.

Thank you to the entire student body as well as the faculty who've already helped to get involved with Chris's care! Overnight we've already tripled his GoFundMe, and it could not be possible without the support of everyone at MCOM!"

- Jose Malavet, Y3

Jose is encouraging his fellow MCOM students and staff to donate towards Chris’ care through GoFundMe. Any and all donations are highly appreciated.
