The Shetland Wool Week Patron has been announced, and the hat pattern is revealed. This year, it's something a little bit different.
| |
Addie, Margaret, and Anne Doull
In a break from tradition, this year’s patron accolade has been presented to Addie and Margaret Doull from Islesburgh Farm in Northmavine, and their family, in recognition of their dedication to the Shetland Flock Book and commitment to preserving and championing the highest-quality Shetland wool.
“It’s an honor for the family to be asked to be patrons of this year’s Shetland Wool Week. I’m extremely proud for mam and dad to be recognized for their work with the Shetland Flock Book, which works to preserve and promote the native breed, and it’s something that all the family is committed to. We have been farming at Islesburgh, Northmavine, since 1970. The whole family, including Addie’s brother Kenny, are involved with the farm and crofts, all helping each other to get the work done.” Anne Doull

The much anticipated hat pattern, which is synonymous with the launch of the patron has also been revealed. Designed by Addie and Margaret’s daughter, Anne, the 'Islesburgh Toorie' takes inspiration from the family’s Flock Book roots and the location of their farm.
| |
Anne's hat features a distinctive Shetland Ram motif, a tribute to the family involvement with the Shetland Flock Book. The inclusion of the print of the wave lace pattern celebrates mom Margaret’s skillful knitted lace. And the colorways are inspired by the many natural shades of their Shetland flock and the heather filled hills and sunset views from the farm.
To make it a snap for you to get started, we've pulled together three Islesburgh Toorie kits each reflecting the original colors used in Anne's design. Knit with Jamieson of Shetland Spindrift, each kit contains six balls of yarn, which is enough to knit the largest of the three sizes. All the colorful yarn you need to create your very own Islesburgh Toorie.

Is steeking on your knitting bucket list? Why would you knit something in the round to knit a flat object? How can you keep your cut knitting from falling apart? So many questions, and we have the answers! This coaster class is gentle introduction to crocheted steek reinforcement. You’ll knit the homework, and then we’ll reinforce, cut, and finish in class. Previous crochet experience not required. You should be able to knit / purl, cast on / bind off, and work small circumferences in the round.
Supplies you’ll need. One light-colored and one dark-colored worsted-weight wool yarn, 50 grams/100 yards each, NOT superwash (Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok is a great choice). You want a nice fuzzy/sticky wool for a good first steek experience. 16”US 7/4.5 mm circular needle, or size to get a fabric you like. Four stitch markers. Contrasting color fingering weight yarn for crocheting steek. Crochet hook, size E. Sharp scissors for cutting!
Homework. Knit your coasters prior to class and be ready to steek!
*This is an in-person class. $50, plus supplies.

Does your favorite hand-knit scarf have pesky moth holes? Is your big toe peeking through the end of your sock? Do the cuffs of your store-bought sweater need some love? Or do you just want the confidence to take apart and re-knit your cherished hand-knit pieces? Join Elise for a truly enlightening 2 and a half hours. Together, we’ll look at how to “read” your knitting to choose the right fix. Anything from a classic darn to invisible re-knitting!
Supplies you'll need. A swatch and tools for learning and practice will be provided. But please feel free to also bring any and all garments you have that are in need of mending. We won't finish them in class, but we’ll talk about how best to tackle each item. You should also bring any mending tools you may already have such as darning thread, darning needles, or locking stitch markers. All of my tools will also be available in class to play with.
*This is an in-person class. $50, plus supplies.
