IGI September Updates

Pickleball Tournament Raises Funds for the Pantry

It seems that everywhere these days pickleball is all the rage. Seizing a golden opportunity, long-time Pantry volunteer Heidi Bryan, in partnership with Union Chapel, organized a round robin pickleball tournament. With 2 levels of play, 2 court locations, and a rain delay, the tournament managed to raise almost $4,000 for the Pantry! Thank you to all who participated as players, organizers, and event volunteers. The funds will play a crucial part in meeting the food needs of our community.

A Sunflower's Journey

Maybe you saw a sunflower growing on top of a mountain of dirt in the Tisbury School playground over the summer. It had quite the journey from the school garden which had to be demoed when construction started. Head over to our Instagram or Facebook page to learn more.

IGI in the News

  • The Pantry’s future home on Dukes County Ave was the subject of a recent article in the Vineyard Gazette. The write-up explores why the new building is so significant against the backdrop of ever-increasing food insecurity on the Island. Read about it here.

  • Bluedot Living recently named IGI’s Executive Director, Rebecca Haag, a local hero! She was interviewed about her role at IGI, how IGI is impacting the food system on the Island, and the organization’s plan to continue fighting against food insecurity and for regenerative agriculture in the years to come. Read her interview here.

  • Congratulations to Juli Vanderhoop for being selected for this year's Creative Living Award. We are proud to have her on the IGI board. Read more here.

  • Elio Silva participated in a series "Highlighting Immigrant Voices" by the Martha's Vineyard Times. Watch his interview here and learn more about his experience being an entrepreneur on the Island. We are lucky to have his expertise on the IGI board.
  • IGI Board Member, Food Pantry Volunteer and local chef, Gail Arnold and her husband Livingston Taylor, have recently traveled to Asni, Morocco, where World Central Kitchen set up shop to produce over 17,000 meals per day for victims of the recent earthquake. Gail reports that the makeshift kitchen is the warehouse of an organic apple collective. The fruits and vegetables are mostly local and the meat comes from Morocco. Like IGI’s kitchen, volunteers are a wonderful mixture of students, foreigners, women from a cooking collective and others. Congrats to Gail and Livingston for taking the Vineyard spirit of nourishing those in need to Morocco!

We are hiring for several positions. Visit our website here to learn more!
