2020 Trends in Planned Giving
Since the onset of COVID-19, many people are experiencing a renewed sense of urgency around the importance of estate planning. “While the pandemic has not motivated all clients to update their estate plans, it has prompted people who suddenly feel more vulnerable to get their affairs in order,” said Helen Kemp, Partner at Virginia Estate & Trust Law. “Putting a will and trust in place, or executing a power of attorney and advance medical directive, gives people a bit of control over part of their lives and their beneficiaries’ futures.”
CARES Act expands charitable deductions in 2020
The CARES Act, enacted as a stimulus response to the pandemic, includes charitable provisions that are set to expire at the end of the year. We have prepared an FAQ to help you plan well for year-end giving.
Keep clients informed about stress on the social sector
One of the most important ways you can help your clients support the charities they care about is to do everything you can to keep clients informed about the increasing challenges faced by the social sector.
Important resources for you and your clients
As year-end quickly approaches, here are two points that may be useful to clients with charitable intent:

  • Stock Transfer Instructions - For clients considering a charitable gift to a fund at the Community Foundation, transfer instructions are readily available on the Foundation’s website here.

  • Local Needs & Giving Opportunities - Stay abreast of critical needs within the community by visiting the Foundation’s page on Giving Together. Here you will find a current list of collaborative funding initiatives in our community – timely information that could be of value to you as you advise clients.
