APPLYING FOR JOBS

I get numerous students asking about how to find a job on campus. First you need to go to the Career Center and work with Garrett Peregud to develop a resume.

Once completed, work with Sonia Yaddgo to have the resume reviewed and schedule a practice interview and show up to the practice interview and be ready to take notes on how you can do better.

Once you have completed those steps, apply for a job using the job bulletin (Handshake App) on the Employment Website. There are currently positions available for students to apply now! PLEASE CONTACT BRYAN LAM RIGHT AWAY for details as positions are filling fast!

You can improve your work skills by attending workshops put on by the career center to improve your chances of being hired. Remember you will be competing with US citizens for these positions and you need to highlight what makes you a better candidate for you to be hired.

You may be able to find a position to work in Admissions and Records, Outreach, Financial Aid, Learning and Technology Resources, Career Center, Child Development Center, Tutoring Center, Facilities, Teacher’s Assistant, and many more departments on campus.

Please invest in making yourself better at interviewing so that you will put your best self forward for these highly competitive positions.

TAXES

All International Students that have been in the US for at least one day in 2022, will need to fill out the 8843 tax form and it is due April 15, 2023. I have attached a blank form and an example for you in this email.

You must mail it to:

Department of the Treasury,

Internal Revenue Service Center,

Austin, TX 73301-0215

If you were working in any part of 2022, you will need to fill out your taxes to claim your social security money back since you are not eligible for that benefit. You will be mailed (yes, mail to your current address by US Postal Service) your W-2 form.

I’m not a tax expert, but the people at Sprintax are, and they have set up some info and blogs to help you. The webinars recording below is free, but they do have a software product that they will sell to you at a cost of around $40 to help you file your taxes. Sprintax now offers the ability to submit your taxes online, no printing necessary.

We have set up a series of tax webinars across the season. You can find the details and registration links below. Each webinar will cover the same topics listed below. Please feel free to share these details with your international population and they can register for the date and time that suits them best:

·         View the Tax Prep Video Recording Here

The informational webinars will cover:

An overview of tax for nonresident students and scholars

Who must file a 2022 US tax return

What income forms students/scholars may receive

Forms that need to be completed and sent to the IRS

We cover terms like FICA, ITIN and Form 1098-T

What happens if students don’t file, or misfile

State tax returns

IRS stimulus payments

Sprintax overview

·         Read the blog on how to prepare your taxes

SDSU VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) FREE TAX HELP is available and open for online appointments: If you are working on campus, I can’t recommend this place enough as they will do your taxes for you for free!!! They are only offering virtual help and you will need to fill out some paperwork before your appointment. Sign up quickly as appointments run out!!

GO HERE for help: https://business.sdsu.edu/vita/foreign

Turbo Tax or H&R Block and many of the other popular tax prep software will NOT work for nonresidents/foreign students. These services also cost $50 -$100

Nonresidents/foreign students must find a software that prepares nonresident returns. Two options are SprintTax  https://www.sprintax.com/ or Glacier Tax Prep https://www.glaciertax. com/Spt/Begin Note that Glacier Tax Prep is $34 but does NOT do state tax returns (no California or any other state). SprintTax does both - the Federal is a flat rate of $38. The state starts at $30 but the actual rate is determined based on the complexity of the return and the state.
