TAXES
All International Students that have been in the US for at least one day in 2023, will need to fill out the 8843 tax form and it is due April 15, 2024. I can provide you an example of the 8843 form if you need, please email bryan.lam@gcccd.edu.
You must mail it to:
Department of the Treasury,
Internal Revenue Service Center,
Austin, TX 73301-0215
If you were working in any part of 2023, you will need to fill out your taxes to claim your social security money back since you are not eligible for that benefit. You will be mailed (yes, mail to your current address by US Postal Service) your W-2 form.
I’m not a tax expert, but the people at Sprintax are, and they have set up some info and blogs to help you. The webinars recording below is free, but they do have a software product that they will sell to you at a cost of around $40 to help you file your taxes. Sprintax now offers the ability to submit your taxes online, no printing necessary.
We have set up a series of tax webinars across the season. You can find the details and registration links below. Each webinar will cover the same topics listed below. Please feel free to share these details with your international population and they can register for the date and time that suits them best:

There are many VITA services in San Diego. Here is a list of all San Diego VITA services (Link)
Turbo Tax or H&R Block and many of the other popular tax prep software will NOT work for nonresidents/foreign students. These services also cost $50 -$100
Nonresidents/foreign students must find a software that prepares nonresident returns. Two options are SprintTax https://www.sprintax.com/ or Glacier Tax Prep https://www.glaciertax. com/Spt/Begin
*Note that Glacier Tax Prep is $34 but does NOT do state tax returns (no California or any other state). SprintTax does both - the Federal is a flat rate of $38. The state starts at $30 but the actual rate is determined based on the complexity of the return and the state.
