Growing Up Victorian

Have you been to the Farm House Museum? The newest exhibition is Growing Up Victorian. Get glimpses into the life of children who lived in the late 1800s. Here are some free programs that go along with this student-curated exhibition.


All minors attending must be accompanied by an adult.

Thursday, March 2

4:30-5:30pm

Join intern Travis Berhenke (History ’23) for an in-depth look at the Growing Up Victorian exhibition that he curated at the Farm House Museum. Explore themes of education, literature, chores and play from 1880 to 1910 in this historic home setting.

Play the part of a Victorian Era child by discovering children’s entertainment from the 1880s through the turn of the century. Children and the young-at-heart can participate in games of the era and see the types of toys and dolls that were popular. Treats provided.

Victorian Fables, Follies, and Fairytales

Gather around the fireplace in the Farm House Museum parlor to hear Victorian fables, follies, and fairytales. These stories are a bit darker than children’s stories of today. This in-person program will be livestreamed on YouTube.

Curator's Tour of Joyce J. Scott: Messages

Brunnier Art Museum curator Adrienne Gennett will tour the special exhibition, Joyce J. Scott: Messages, while examining the storytelling found in Scott’s beadwork and traditions of beadwork throughout the world.

Words Meet Art

For Part 1 of Words Meet Art with Ames Writers Collective, participants will receive a guided tour of Harriet Bart: Material Alchemy to educate and inspire creativity. An introduction to “writing to writing prompts” with Ana McCracken, founder of Ames Writers Collective, will follow with writing sessions to connect writers to the exhibition.

Part 1 has two options and registration is required.
