Interiors and Decorative Arts
I would like to think the Olsons live by the following quote by William Morris: Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful. It's an aspiration, not quite reality. But we can keep trying, right? The quote popped into mind today when I was talking to one of my favorite customers and he made the remark that he loved craft that was done so well that it rose to the level of artistry. Of course, it drove me over to my decorative arts and interior design section to see what might be a good thing to focus on this week. Thonet Stahlrohr-Möbel -- Tubular Steel Furniture (1930/1989) Life really is too short to settle for shoddy workmanship or something that will just get you by, right? I'd rather spend 3 times the amount for something that will last 10-15 years than something that you will have to replace in a season or two.

Space For Living: Creative Interior Decoration and Design -- Signed! New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1938. Good. First Edition. 111 pp. Folio. Dust jacket has considerable wear, chipping, and losses; now in mylar cover. Beige buckram cover with brown horizontal lines printed across front and rear boards; some staining. Preliminary pages front and rear have darkened from age and water damage at one point in its life. Clean within.
An important work by Paul Frankl (1886-1958) that looks beyond his well-known work in furniture design to encompass both the architecture and interior design style then known as Art Moderne era, later to be known as Art Deco. Frankl rode the Art Moderne wave, but one can see from this publication how he was beginning to adapt that streamlined style to one that evolved as the Depression waned and the war in Europe began to build. This copy is inscribed by Frankl below his frontispiece portrait, "To George Neville in true/friendship/Paul T Frankl" (#29789) Price: $375.00 | | | | Ross, Phyllis. Curated by Alexander von Vegesack, this publication is fascinating in how it has reproduced the 1930-31 collection of German and French designs offered by Thonet Stahlrohr-Möbel. That year's line featured work by Le Corbusier, Lily Reich, Marcel Breuer, Mies van der Rohe, Mart Stam, and Guyot. 84 loose cards, 62 show the furniture lines. An unusual feature of the time is that the final 8 cards demonstrate both assembly and repair instructions. (#29987) Price: $150.00 | | | | | | |
