The demands and rigor of medical school are well-known. With rising cost-
$278,455 for private schools and $207,866 for public schools- an equally important but lesser acknowledged fact is that some students are not able to pay for travel and related expenses for residency interviews during their last year of medical school.
Would it be possible for a GHCF donor to help these students? The surprisingly, simple answer was yes! A donor family who wishes to remain anonymous was moved to action when they learned that students at Baylor College of Medicine face these very challenges.
The family says, "Supporting education has always been an important part of our mission. When we learned of the financial need of the students, the importance of residency and its impact on their future, giving a scholarship was a natural fit. While some may think it's an odd choice to support future physicians, there are many students who are struggling financially. We didn't understand the extent of this before GHCF helped us do the research." To read more, click

Stanford Social Innovation Review
encourages donors not to stop funding an organization just because you can. Donors are asked not to walk away from success because you don't think your money makes a difference anymore, the organization can attract other funding or because the organization may become dependent on you. Consider staying the course.

Communicating with Policymakers
|
Steve joined CEOs from four other Texas-based community foundations to visit key legislators as part of the Community Foundation Public Awareness Initiative. The goal was to educate legislators about the work of community foundations and how foundations partner with many of the legislator's constituents to improve the quality of life throughout Texas. Discussion focused on how community foundations and our donors might be impacted by broad-based tax reform and changes to rules concerning donor advised funds and donations of appreciated assets.

Renee was a panelist at the National Association of Corporate Directors Texas TriCities Chapter meeting where over 200 corporate leaders attended. The focus of the panel was for members to learn more about what is on the horizon for philanthropy and non-profit board governance in 2016.
