Thomas College announces a new physical/health education K-12 undergraduate degree through its Peter and Paula Lunder School of Education to prepare preservice teachers in Health and Physical Education for grades K-12. This new program joins the College’s suite of teacher certification programs at the early childhood, elementary, middle, and secondary levels.
“We are so excited to offer a program geared towards Health and Physical Education out of the Lunder School of Education. This program fills a need in the local and state community and responds to a request from our own students here at Thomas," said Lunder School of Education Chair Dr. Katie Rybakova. “We are excited to partner with faculty across our campus as well as stellar professionals out in the field to prepare future physical education and health educators.”
“There is a real need in Maine schools to focus on health and wellness,” said Thomas College Provost and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Thomas Edwards. “Students need opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge to lead healthy lives, to prepare them for the physical and mental challenges of school, inside and outside the classroom.”
Students in the program will complete courses ranging from Strength and Conditioning and Sports Psychology to Public Health and Disease Prevention. This content knowledge is then complemented with courses on effective classroom teaching and field experiences to gain hands-on knowledge in the field.

Maine State Credit Union is pleased to announce that Elizabeth Jean has joined its organization as Senior Vice President of Mortgage Lending. In this newly created role, she will oversee the strategic direction of the mortgage team and will report to Brie-Anne Mellor, SVP and Chief Lending Officer.
"We are excited to have someone with Elizabeth's knowledge and experience join our team," said Mellor. "Having had her own mortgage business and having worked at one of the largest regional banks in Maine, she brings a lot of product and market knowledge to the organization, which will help to provide our members with a better experience and product selection."
Elizabeth Jean has spent her career in the mortgage industry; she worked at a large regional bank for over seven years and went on to operate Gold Star Mortgage in Augusta for three years.
"I was attracted to the culture and the people at Maine State Credit Union and am thrilled that I took the chance," said Jean. "I am excited to help provide real-life solutions to challenges that the mortgage and real estate industry faces. Buying a house, whether someone's first or third, is a big financial commitment, and I am excited to help build training and processes to make it as easy as possible."
Elizabeth Jean attended the University of Maine and is a board member of the Sexual Assault Crisis and Support Center. She is also an active volunteer within her children's sports communities. Jean lives in Central Maine with her husband, two kids, and three dogs.
