Resident Spotlight - Nancy Gerber
|
|
“I have met and love a lot of people who live here. There is a variety of interesting, congenial people, and there is a certain informality that lends itself to joining groups and getting involved.”

Nancy Gerber is not a shrinking violet. She says she was shy as a child and “got over” that. This determined resident grew up on Long Island and, with a twinkle in her eye, enjoys sharing that during her youth, she “flunked field hockey at not one, but two schools!” Gerber graduated from Wells College, a small women's college in New York, where she said the boys came to see the girls, not the other way. Three weeks after graduating with a BA in English, she married and moved to Philadelphia.
Gerber worked in her early career in the Reservations Department at Pan Am Airways, followed by almost a decade at the Women’s Health Care Center in Chester. She later earned an MEd from Temple, and after divorce, worked in the insurance industry because it offered what she refers to as the “niceties,” like pensions and health insurance.

After raising her three kids in Swarthmore, her life travels took her back to her New York roots, where she lived in New York City until four years ago. At that time, she decided White Horse Village was the place for her. “I had a lot of very good friends and neighbors in Swarthmore, and many of my Swarthmore friends happened to be moving here, and I never looked at anything else,” said Gerber. “I have met and love a lot of people who live here. There is a variety of interesting, congenial people, and there is a certain informality that lends itself to joining groups and getting involved. ”

Sustainability Committee
Kicks off 2022 Plans
|
|
Last year, after great interest, residents formed a Sustainability Committee that is composed of residents and team members. After consulting with outside experts to better educate the group on sustainability tactics, the committee selected four areas to focus their efforts. This year, they will educate community members on sustainability initiatives through educational articles and live/video programs this year.
The first of four sustainability topics for 2022 centers on our campus grounds and includes the following:
- Transition to plant-based chemicals and reduce overall chemical usage on turf and in beds
- Plant native wildflowers and grasses in parking islands and around campus to create habitats for pollinators such as bees and butterflies
- Installation of a rain garden to control storm water and recharge the aquifer
- Plant native trees and shrubs on campus
Thank you to the committee members: Dee Crough, Nancy Davis, Welthie Fitzgerald, Bob Higgins, Ann Hunter, Dale Steffens, Carol Taylor, Len Weiser, and Sandy Young.
We look forward to the discussion and the lessons to be learned to be better stewards of our natural resources and community.

Meet “Servi”
We have a new team member with a steely gaze. Meet “Servi,” the latest addition to our dining team. Servi, a music-playing robotic server, is capable of delivering food, beverages, and other items to dining tables so our team members can spend more time engaging with residents. Servi will be getting a new name soon, chosen by submissions from residents.

Team Member Spotlight:
Laurena Miller
|
|
Laurena Miller is an icon around campus and is likely the first person you will meet when you walk in the door. With nearly 34 (wow) years of dedicated service at White Horse Village, Laurena can say she has seen it all. Construction was still underway when she first took to her post, and besides knowing every resident by name and most of their family members, she proudly recalls our first resident, a cat named Timmy! Laurena has always gone beyond the call of duty, even using her own time to purchase baking supplies for a resident who loved to bake, but couldn’t get to the store. Thank you Laurena!
