Business Owner's New Year Checklist
The Economic Development Team wants to help your business succeed in 2021. From goals and networking to being prepared for an emergency, check out these suggestions.
-
Put important dates on your calendar. One important date is March 1, 2021, which is when Isle of Wight County business license renewals are due. For businesses located in the Towns of Smithfield or Windsor, the renewal date is April 15, 2021.
- Reflect on your business successes and make a goal list for 2021. Make an exhaustive list of what you would like to accomplish and then break it down to accomplish a few things each month.
-
Educate yourself on something you want to learn more about. Check out the Economic Development website’s calendar of events for webinars and workshops hosted by partner agencies throughout the region.
-
Make a plan for emergencies such as storms, flooding and power outages. Sign up for IWAlert, a free emergency notification service that sends critical communications and emergency information through phone calls, text messages and emails.
-
Think locally and look for local partners for a new idea or event you may have. Get your business listed on the Economic Development Website's Local Business List. It’s FREE!

January is National Mentoring Month
Did you know? Entrepreneurs who work with a mentor are five times more likely to start a business than those who do not have a mentor. And, small business owners who receive three or more hours of mentoring report higher revenues and increased growth.
SCORE is a 50+ year-old nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals through education and mentorship.
Because its work is supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration, and thanks to a network of 10,000+ volunteers, SCORE is able to deliver services at no charge or at a very low cost.
If you haven’t met with a SCORE mentor yet, now is the perfect time. Find a mentor and start working toward your 2021 business goals together. Hampton Roads SCORE has offices in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. MORE

Wholehearted Counseling - Our Own Story
Wholehearted Counseling was established in 2018 by Bryana Weaver, MA, ATR-BC, LPC, CCTP, and Kim Foreman, LCSW, and has offices in Carrollton and Virginia Beach. The practice offers counseling services to children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. The practice strives to help its clients identify causes of concern, provide a safe environment for healing, and support them where they are on their journey toward wholehearted living. Counseling services are offered both in-person and via telehealth.
The vision for the practice came from researcher and storyteller Brené Brown, who has spent the last two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy. What resonated with the owners is the concept of wholehearted living and what it means to live as our authentic selves. Wholehearted Counseling hopes to provide an environment where clients can embrace their vulnerabilities, own their stories, and move towards authenticity.
In 2020 both locations expanded to bring on additional therapists to support the growing need for mental health support. The practice now has a total of eight counselors. “I grew up in a small community, so it has always been a goal of mine to be back to a small community serving the people, said co-owner Bryana Weaver about the Isle of Wight location. As we developed the business, community became a part of our vision.”
The Carrollton office is located at 15064 Carrollton Boulevard, Suite 19, Carrollton, VA 23314. For more information visit the website or follow the practice on Instagram.
