Message from the President
Larry Slater, PhD, RN-BC, CNE, FAAN
It's hard to believe the summer is winding down, but what a hot summer it was! For those who were attending classes this summer, I hope that you took some time for yourselves, to enjoy the weather and spend quality time with family and friends. For those who are about to return to school, I trust the summer was a time of great reflection and relaxation, and that you are refreshed and ready to continue your nursing education journey.
As we embark on a new academic year, I am always drawn to my thoughts when I was in nursing school. First there were the academic questions - What is this year going to look like? How hard are my classes going to be? What clinicals will I like, or, perhaps, not like? Then there were the "life" questions - How am I paying for school? Am I going to have to get a job? Are there any scholarship opportunities available to me? Will I ever have some time to myself before the end of the semester? These are just some of the questions that I had, and I am sure that you have them too.

As you cherish the fruits of your hard work, we hope for your continued success in all your future endeavors. Congratulations to the Class of 2024!
FNSNA extends our best wishes in this next chapter of your nursing journey!

Receiving a scholarship from The Foundation of the NSNA can be a life altering experience allowing student nurses to achieve their dreams of entering the nursing profession. Here we reconnect with a previous scholar and see how receiving a scholarship impacted their nursing education and career as a nurse.

The scholarship allowed me to focus on my education, rather than the stress of how to pay for my last semester. With this release of pressure, I was able to maintain my nursing GPA, graduating with a 3.9 nursing GPA.
My work ethic was rewarded and I was acknowledged by the Sam Houston State University School of Nursing Faculty and Staff. I was awarded the David Payne Leadership Award at graduation in December 2023.
The award of this scholarship encouraged me in a time of need and I decided to apply to a perioperative internship offered at my university. I was accepted into the program and through my dedication and hard work I was offered a full-time position for my dream job as an Operating Room Nurse.
I recently passed my NCLEX and am scheduled to begin my New Graduate Residency Program in February in the Operating Room at St. Luke's The Woodlands Hospital in The Woodlands, Texas.
