MAMQUAM ROAD (GRAVEL PORTION) CLOSED DUE TO PUBLIC DANGER
Barricades and Do Not Enter signs have been installed on the gravel portion of Mamquam Road (east of Paco Road) due to fractures discovered along a 400-metre section of the road as a result of the heavy rain. There has also been a substantial landslide near the bottom, blocking the road completely.

There is a significant public safety risk as the slope is unpredictable and unstable, and could fail. No one should travel this road on foot or by bike (the road is already closed to vehicle traffic).

The District is exploring the next steps and will provide further updates when available.

DISTRICT RESPONDS TO MISINFORMATION MAILED TO RESIDENTS
Squamish residents have received a postcard from an anonymous group identifying as Squamish Voices with misinformation about three covered shelters that were recently installed in Squamish. While the District generally does not respond to anonymous attacks, the far-reaching nature of this tactic has prompted us to do so. The shelters were built to allow people to safely gather outdoors and undercover in public spaces and were paid for by Provincial funding through a COVID-19 recovery grant. A growing need for this type of shelter became apparent during the pandemic when gathering outdoors was safer than indoors. Learn more about the costing and read the full story here.

Low-Carbon Incentive Program now in effect for residential construction in Squamish

The Low-Carbon Incentive Program aims to establish a low-carbon incentive for residential construction in order to minimize the environmental impact of housing development by discouraging the use of high-carbon energy sources. Introduced earlier this year, the program is currently available to homebuilders having been incorporated into the District of Squamish Zoning Bylaw, No. 2200, 2011.

By encouraging the construction of buildings using low-carbon energy sources such as electricity (rather than high-carbon energy sources such as fossil fuels), the District aims to lower greenhouse gas emissions, align residential home construction with the goals of the Community Climate Action Plan and increase the energy options in home construction.
