Conducting high-impact research is part of our core mission at USF and a big reason why we were invited to join the Association of American Universities. Today we are announcing some terrific news that shows our university's research enterprise is on the rise.
According to new data we recently submitted to the National Science Foundation, USF’s research expenditures totaled $461 million in fiscal year 2023, an impressive 14% increase over last year. NSF does not release data on how universities compare until later in the year, however, if we look at last year’s rankings, $461 million would have placed USF No. 2 in Florida and No. 41 nationally among public universities.
Of our total research spending, nearly 53% comes from funds awarded by federal agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and NSF. At $42 million, the USF Health Diabetes and Endocrinology Center generated the most research expenditures of any unit at USF.
The growth in our total research expenditures signals that we are moving in the right direction toward our goal of enhancing our university’s reputation for excellence in research and innovation, and it is a testament to the hard work of our innovative faculty whose efforts help strengthen USF’s position as a leader in solving problems, improving lives and creating a healthier future for our communities.
I invite you to look at a more detailed breakdown of some of the areas that experienced significant growth over the past year here.
