Week of November 21, 2023

From the President

USF is a leader in offering global learning experiences, and we are honored to earn the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities 2023 International Impact Award for Global Teaching and Learning. To be nationally recognized by our peers with this award is a testament to USF's sustained excellence in providing innovative opportunities for our students, faculty and staff to be globally engaged.

We received the award during the APLU Annual Meeting last week in Seattle, where I participated in several sessions on important topics impacting our nation's public research universities, such as the future of student success and artificial intelligence in higher education. I also had the honor of leading a group discussion in a session titled “Women in Leadership: Pathways to the Presidency.” Research shows women are underrepresented in higher education leadership roles, and despite recent gains, more can be done to promote access to these opportunities. I enjoyed this thought-provoking discussion and look forward to continuing the conversation with other women leaders on how we can make a greater impact on this issue in the future.

Updates

• I was pleased to join many of our faculty and staff and participate in last week's Great American Teach-In. We had nearly 200 volunteers from across all three USF campuses sign up for this annual event and talk with K-12 students about their careers and expertise. Alongside USF Student Body President Cesar Esmeraldi, I had the privilege of returning to my alma mater, Chamberlain High School in Tampa, to discuss my educational and professional journey, and what it's like to serve as USF president. Thank you to the Office of Youth Experiences for coordinating our university's efforts on this important community initiative, which we hope will continue to grow in future years.

• Congratulations to the USF Women's Volleyball team for winning the American Athletic Conference's East Division title last week! I wish the team all the best as they close out the season against Rice on Wednesday.

I hope you will join us this Saturday night for our final home football game of the season. A victory over Charlotte would make us bowl-eligible for the first time since 2018 and every bit of fan support will help us get there.

To show our appreciation, USF Athletics is offering all faculty and staff two complimentary tickets to Saturday’s football game, as well as to our men’s basketball and women's volleyball home games this week. You can claim your free tickets here.

As the holiday season and the end of the fall semester approaches, this can be a stressful time, especially as numerous global events continue to affect our lives. It is crucial that we all continue to prioritize our overall health and well-being, and the upcoming breaks will be wonderful opportunities for all of us to find time to rest, recharge and spend time with loved ones. The USF Employee Success Center in HR provides several helpful resources on employee wellness.

Please mark your calendar for our annual Holiday Open House — which is a great way to relieve some of that stress — scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 30, from 4-6 p.m. at the Lifsey House.
