At age 85, Evie Preston is having the time of her life! A successful financial advisor for over 25 years, she rose from housewife/mom to school teacher to the cutthroat business of finance and Wall Street.
My husband always said that the fun in life is wearing—or—trying—many different hats. To that end I’ve had more fun than most! I like to think of my several careers as a winding road of experience vs. predictable rungs
up a ladder.
My path offered surprising successes and instructive failures. However, through each phase of my march to senior status, I wrote essays, articles, columns, a book and I can certainly call my endeavors word-worthy; every
job or profession brought skills and insights that contributed to the next.
Though I’ve yet to try brain surgery, I’m only 85, so there’s still plenty of time. Actually, reaching this pinnacle, I’m so busy massaging the connection between body and mind that I’ve reset my age back to 65. I need twenty
extra years to pack in all the plusses that come with age. My mantra? You’ll never grow old believing in a future…so plan ahead!
Moving forward thru marriage, family and careers, I’ve gained knowledge, experience, confidence, expertise and best of all, choice. These equal a “contentment quotient” to do what I love--writing. I’ve accomplished more during my “at home” Covid confinement than during many other periods of
my life.

With the New Year upon us, it’s time to refocus on taking care of your healthcare needs. One simple way to protect your health is to see your primary care provider for an annual physical. That’s because preventing an illness is far better than treating one.

"Can You Help Me? I Can't Get
My Covid Shot."
"I'm 79 and scared about getting Covid. So many people sick and dying.
I appreciate that healthcare workers are first in line followed by staff and residents in long term care facilities. But I can't even get someone to return my calls for an appointment."--Ruth, San Jose, CA.
I wish I could help you. It's very frustrating. Many people are complaining and unable to make an appointment. The problem is Covid vaccine supplies are extremely low with heavy, unprecedented demand. (Kaiser had to shut down its phone appointment service after receiving over 90,000 calls.)
In California, first in line are healthcare workers, long term care patients/staff and emergency medical personnel. Next is the 75+ which includes you. However, I've heard of people as young as 55 getting vaccinated so it may help to "know" someone in healthcare. Emailing or calling for an appointment at Kaiser is out of the question at the moment. Recorded message? "Don't
call us. We'll call you." Similar situation everywhere.
Last Resort--over 65 and unable to make an appointment? Show up at the places giving out shots such as hospitals, pharmacies and vaccination sites. Check online with your county public health department for locations. You might get lucky.
Our new president has promised "1 million shots per day for the next 100 days." So there is hope.
