Conversation With Evelyn (Evie) Preston The Money Lady--Larry Hayes
At age 85, Evie Preston is having the time of her life! A successful financial advisor for over 25 years, she rose from housewife/mom to school teacher to the cutthroat business of finance and Wall Street.
My husband always said that the fun in life is wearing—or—trying—many different hats. To that end I’ve had more fun than most! I like to think of my several careers as a winding road of experience vs. predictable rungs
up a ladder.
My path offered surprising successes and instructive failures. However, through each phase of my march to senior status, I wrote essays, articles, columns, a book and I can certainly call my endeavors word-worthy; every
job or profession brought skills and insights that contributed to the next.
Though I’ve yet to try brain surgery, I’m only 85, so there’s still plenty of time. Actually, reaching this pinnacle, I’m so busy massaging the connection between body and mind that I’ve reset my age back to 65. I need twenty
extra years to pack in all the plusses that come with age. My mantra? You’ll never grow old believing in a future…so plan ahead!
Moving forward thru marriage, family and careers, I’ve gained knowledge, experience, confidence, expertise and best of all, choice. These equal a “contentment quotient” to do what I love--writing. I’ve accomplished more during my “at home” Covid confinement than during many other periods of
my life.

A New Year. Renewed
Focus On Your Health
|
|
With the New Year upon us, it’s time to refocus on taking care of your healthcare needs. One simple way to protect your health is to see your primary care provider for an annual physical. That’s because preventing an illness is far better than treating one.
only about half get the care they need. An annual physical is a simple way
to detect chronic conditions in the earliest stages, giving you a greater
chance of reversing the problem.
high blood pressure, is sometimes called “the silent killer” because there’s
no obvious sign that something is wrong.
However, hypertension increases your risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and heart attack. Diabetes, glaucoma, some cancers, metabolic problems
and many other chronic conditions can sneak up on you.
With an annual physical, we check for any red flags of those silent conditions developing and recommend necessary screenings such as colonoscopies or mammograms.
Now, while good health is on the top of your mind, is a great time to schedule your annual physical.

ASK LARRY
--Larry Hayes, A050 CEO/Publisher
"Can You Help Me? I Can't Get
My Covid Shot."
"I'm 79 and scared about getting Covid. So many people sick and dying.
I appreciate that healthcare workers are first in line followed by staff and residents in long term care facilities. But I can't even get someone to return my calls for an appointment."--Ruth, San Jose, CA.
I wish I could help you. It's very frustrating. Many people are complaining and unable to make an appointment. The problem is Covid vaccine supplies are extremely low with heavy, unprecedented demand. (Kaiser had to shut down its phone appointment service after receiving over 90,000 calls.)
In California, first in line are healthcare workers, long term care patients/staff and emergency medical personnel. Next is the 75+ which includes you. However, I've heard of people as young as 55 getting vaccinated so it may help to "know" someone in healthcare. Emailing or calling for an appointment at Kaiser is out of the question at the moment. Recorded message? "Don't
call us. We'll call you." Similar situation everywhere.
Last Resort--over 65 and unable to make an appointment? Show up at the places giving out shots such as hospitals, pharmacies and vaccination sites. Check online with your county public health department for locations. You might get lucky.
Our new president has promised "1 million shots per day for the next 100 days." So there is hope.

"Shifting Gears"
50 Baby Boomers Share Their Meaningful Journeys
In Retirement--Richard Haiduck
I just finished reading Shifting Gears by Richard Haiduck and came away inspired. He interviewed 75 boomers--narrowed down to 50--about "life changes" they undertook after retiring. Not content to "play golf" or "watch TV" all day, these active retirees reinvented themselves and found new and meaningful things to do. From gig working to living in a senior community to exploring America in a RV. You'll enjoy their stories and come away with ideas for the "next chapter" in your life. They tell in their own words what it's like after retirement. The good and the scary part. To order your copy, go to: amazon.com.

The 50+ interviews provide revealing conversations showing the range of experiences from a diverse group of interviewees. Haiduck graduated from Miami University and got his MBA from Xavier University. He leads an active retirement including biking, reading and mentoring of social entrepreneurs.

With over 15 years experience right here in Silicon Valley,
I can answer all your questions.
Will the bank own my home?
The bank does not take ownership of your home; they simply extend a loan to you. You continue to own and live in your home and are responsible for payment of property taxes, required insurance and if applicable, HOA fees.
Do my children/family members lose their inheritance?
No, a borrower may designate an heir of their choosing. The heir(s) will inherit the home after the last surviving borrower passes away and may then choose to keep (by paying off the amount of reverse mortgage balance) or sell the home. Should they choose to sell, any remaining equity after paying off the loan (minus interest and fees) would be theirs.
