Thank you for subscribing to the Inside Deschutes County E-Newsletter! Here's what's making news across the County:

Senate Bill 1013, which was passed in July of this year, allows counties to permit property owners in rural residential zones who live in their primary dwelling to rent out an RV on their property as a residential tenancy subject to certain conditions.

Deschutes County is beginning the legislative process to adopt amendments to codify this in the County Code.

The Planning Commission is scheduled to hold an initial public hearing on Thursday, November 9, at 5:30 pm at the Deschutes Services Center in the Barnes and Sawyer room.

Stay tuned to the Community Development website for draft code and ways to participate.

Learn More about the Project

The draft Deschutes County 2040 Comprehensive Plan is now available for community review and feedback.

Over the past 16 months, planning staff have engaged community members and technical experts on key issues facing the County. The resulting Deschutes County 2040 plan provides a policy framework for decision making on land use and planning matters in the rural County for the next twenty years. The plan will apply to private land in Deschutes County outside of urban growth boundaries.

Staff invites community members to review the draft plan and provide feedback to staff as the project enters the public hearing phase. To view the draft and additional information about the project, please visit deschutes.org/2040.

Respiratory Season Guidance and Vaccine Updates

As we head into respiratory season, Deschutes County Public Health wants to help residents stay healthy and protect themselves from illnesses such as COVID-19, RSV, and Influenza.

Due to the end of the COVID-19 emergency and the commercialization of COVID-19 vaccinations, COVID-19 vaccines will be distributed and paid for in a new way this fall. The majority of vaccine will be purchased and distributed directly from the manufacturers to pharmacies and health care providers, similar to influenza vaccine.

Due to this shift, Deschutes County Health Services will only be receiving limited doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and will not be providing large community vaccine clinics. This year, we will continue to focus our COVID-19 and influenza vaccination efforts to those:

  • in congregate settings like shelters and long-term care facilities
  • most at risk for severe disease
  • who may not have other ways of accessing these vaccines including uninsured

LifeSaver Awards

Congratulations to Deschutes County 9-1-1 Dispatcher Alice Baer! She was awarded a Bend Fire & Rescue “LifeSaver Award” for her part in the successful resuscitation of Bend resident Scott Walker. Debra Walker, Scott's wife, was also recognized with the same award.

On May 1, Mr. Walker was in his bedroom when he went into cardiac arrest. Debra immediately called 9-1-1 and, with guidance from Alice, administered CPR until Bend Police Department officers and Bend Fire & Rescue medics arrived on scene to take over lifesaving interventions.

Congratulations, Alice and Debra!
