RTD marches in the Juneteenth parade

On Saturday, members of RTD’s Community Engagement, Commuter Rail, Transit Police and Bus Operations teams marched through Denver's historic Five Points neighborhood to celebrate Juneteenth, participating in Denver's longest-running parade.

Surrounded by dance teams, Denver sports mascots and other local organizations, the parade celebrated the anniversary of the date in 1865 when the last enslaved individuals in the United States learned they had been freed. RTD's parade bus, wrapped in a diverse and colorful design, played upbeat tunes for marchers and onlookers, with many people breaking out in song and dance as it rolled down 26th Avenue. The crowd was excited to see the bus, sharing appreciation for RTD and the services provided to the neighborhoods.

The parade kicked off the Juneteenth Music Festival, lively with performers, vendors and homemade food. The festival spanned five blocks of Welton Street and lasted all weekend.

What are you looking forward to this summer?

Summer officially begins today – and this season is a time when employees typically take breaks from work to rest and recharge. We asked how you intend to enjoy the coming months. Here are responses from three of our colleagues:

“I am looking forward to biking, hiking and camping at Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and Moab with family and friends! Two weeks!”

Hazel Wing, Station Starter

“I am looking forward to gaining my weekends back, as I will be officially retiring from the Colorado Air National Guard effective June 30, 2024. Twenty-one years of total military service via the Army, Army National Guard and Air National Guard.”

Carl Green Jr., Director, Civil Rights Division

“I just got back from the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal last week, and now I have a full summer ahead of intense mountain biking, including trips to Bentonville, Arkansas, and Whistler, British Columbia. I also have tickets to see A Day to Remember and Sum 41 at Red Rocks, the latter being their final ever show in Denver as a band.”
