Coping Panels Project wraps up ahead of schedule | RTD has concluded its two-year project to repair the retaining wall caps that run along I-25 between Denver and Lone Tree. The project, which was initially scheduled to run through mid-September, began in April 2023. All equipment has been removed from the alignment, and light rail trains that were required to single-track around work crews began double-track operations last Thursday.
Meet Anthony Sabia: HR can ‘make people's professional and personal lives better’ | Anthony Sabia, RTD’s newest Director of Total Rewards, brings extensive experience in human resources – and joins the agency from aviation carrier Frontier Airlines. In making this transition, Sabia observed, he is shifting from the world of Airbus planes to buses and trains. More broadly, he said, sound HR practices are the same across industries, and he is excited to contribute positively to the culture at RTD.
From the General Counsel Department: employee elections guidance | With just over two months until Election Day, the United States is squarely immersed in campaign season for races at local, state and national levels. As an RTD employee, you may have a personal interest in these activities and wonder whether your employment with a political subdivision of the state affects the degree to which you can participate in them.
RTD operators take on the 2024 Snowplow Roadeo | On a hot Friday morning last week, snow was nowhere to be seen – but the plows were out. In the back lot at District Shops, 11 teams of Facilities Maintenance colleagues turned up to compete in RTD’s 22nd Snowplow Roadeo, an event testing diagnostics, written knowledge and driving skill through a coned course. The top two teams are headed next month to the National Snow Roadeo, in Loveland.
RTD announces second round of special project funding | Last Thursday, RTD announced the allocation of its second round of Partnership Program funding, benefiting four pilot projects selected to improve mobility for communities throughout the Denver metro area. Service related to these selected pilots will begin in 2025.
RTD celebrates latest class of DTECH graduates
Yesterday, inside the technical training bays at District Shops, RTD honored the seven newest graduates of its 12-week Diesel Technology (DTECH) program. Joined by General Superintendent of Maintenance Sangman Yoon and Assistant General Superintendent of Maintenance Eric Castillo, both at left in yellow vests, and Technical Trainers Tim Wallace and Jon Paul Mitchell, in blue polo shirts, the graduates are (from left to right): Luke Menezes, Luis Garcia, Mario Najera, Oscar Rosas, Cristian Cervantes, Gonzalo Moreno and Jaden Trujillo. Since the program began in 2016, RTD has hired 48 graduates. Within vehicle maintenance, 31% of RTD’s general repair mechanics, 25% of quality control employees and 20% of equipment maintenance supervisors are DTECH graduates. Top student Menezes applied yesterday for a general repair mechanic position with RTD. “This program does train you for the real world, and I found it really engaging,” he said. “Here, I found my place and was able to do something that I really like.”
Changes are underway on East Metro inspection pits
Driven by safety and after many years of wear, the four in-ground inspection pits at East Metro are getting a substantial upgrade. The pits – composed of a structural steel frame over a concrete deck and footing – are of original construction and were installed around 1980.
The pits have shown signs of structural fatigue and been repaired multiple times through the years. Changes underway on the first pit illustrate the upgrades coming to all of them: replacing the steel that constitutes the inner rails; fixing the concrete deck adjacent to the pits, to eliminate tripping hazards; providing a new ventilation system fan, so employees can breathe cool, clean air; replacing all old lights with new ones; and replacing the fire suppression system. Work on all East Metro pits is to be completed by January 2025.

Bus operator's braking habits are excellent |
Bus operator Antonio Medina is one of the few that uses their brakes correctly. I have two German Shepherd service dogs, and most drivers slam on their brakes so often that my boys and I slide all over the bus.

Light rail to return to downtown Denver with September service changes |
RTD is on track to fully complete all reconstruction work on the five downtown rail intersections, marking the end to Phase 1 of the Downtown Rail Reconstruction Project.
Since the project began in late May, crews have already completed three of the five rail and roadway intersection improvements at Broadway and Welton, as well as the 15th Street intersections with California and Stout, on time or ahead of schedule. Work at the 17th Street intersections with California and Stout are nearing completion. The Phase 1 work is an investment in RTD’s future and ensures assets are maintained in a state of good repair.
Once the downtown rail replacement work is complete, light rail service will not immediately return to the Downtown Loop. Services will return as part of the Sept. 29 service changes. In the meantime, RTD will continue to perform routine maintenance related to its rail network, including overhead electrical wire and preventative roadway and rail repairs.
Following completion of Phase 1, rail replacement in the downtown area will pause until Phases 2 through 4 begin in 2025. That work involves improvements planned for midblock segments in the Downtown Loop, Colfax Avenue and the Welton Street corridor.
All light rail services in downtown Denver will resume operations beginning Sept. 29. Visit the service changes page for more information on the final September 2024 service changes.
