Crain’s Detroit Business released its 2023 Notable Leaders in DEI. Among the leaders listed is Sandra Etherly-Johnson, executive director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Community Relations at the Flint & Genesee Group.

Governor Whitmer Announces Over $73 Million in Support for Entrepreneurial Hubs Across the State

The Flint & Genesee Chamber Foundation – a nonprofit, supporting entity of the Flint & Genesee Group – will receive a $2,366,356 grant through the State of Michigan’s Small Business Support Hubs (SBHS) program.


The funding will establish the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance, a division of the Group, as one of 27 entrepreneurial hubs throughout the state.


More details will be soon. In the meantime, the organization has an opening for an additional Small Business Programs Coordinator.

FACES of Flint & Genesee Business: Sherri Stephens, Stephens Wealth Management Group

Sherri Stephens’ path to leadership has been unique, especially in her profession. When Stephens graduated high school, she planned on attending the University of Michigan-Flint to pursue education, like her parents. However, when she was hired by an investment advisory firm her life path took a turn.


“I didn’t know about Wallstreet or investment,” says Stephens. “I started as an intern and then became an assistant due to my boss’ encouragement. He encouraged me to take business classes and became my mentor.”

Fifty years after Al Serra opened the doors of his first Chevy store in Grand Blanc, his customer-first philosophy – “Take care of the customer, take care of the associates, and the rest will take care of itself” – is still alive and thriving in Michigan and across the nation.


Serra Automotive is now ranked No. 6 in the country among privately held retail automotive groups, according to Automotive News. They employ over 3,000 people in seven states and manage a network of 54 dealerships, 66 automotive franchises, and 25 brands.


That success has been possible thanks to Al Serra’s solid formula for growth, customer service, and team development, said his son Joe Serra, who purchased the business in 2000 and now serves as company chairman.
