September 30 | National Day for
Truth & Reconciliation
Canada's second-ever National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will take place this Friday, September 30.

The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. This day is a vital component to the reconciliation process. Industry Discusses the End of Border Restrictions
After months of urging loosened COVID-19 restrictions for visitors, leaders in the tourism sector have welcomed the announcement from the federal government declaring that starting October 1, visitors no longer need to be vaccinated or use the country's ArriveCan app in order to enter the country.

BCHA's President and CEO, Ingrid Jarrett, spoke with Glen Korsrtom of Business In Vancouver, outlining the impact this will have on our sector, particularly for the events and meeting market.
Go2HR Released August Labour Stats: Average Wages and Workforce
Some positive news being reported by go2HR as evidenced by their BC Tourism & Hospitality Employment Tracker. Key highlights include:
  • The Tourism and Hospitality labour force increased by 1% to 367,000 in August 2022 from 363,500 in July 2022. The increase was most significant in the Accommodation sector. Data suggests that the overall industry labour force is now above its pre-COVID level (367,000 in August 2022 compared to 358,500 in August 2019).
  • The average hourly earnings in BC’s Tourism and Hospitality sector have been steady with some fluctuation between $22 to $25 over the past two years. Average hourly earnings by sector ranged from $20 to $33 in August 2022. The Transportation and Recreation and Entertainment sectors had the highest average hourly earnings, while the Food and Beverage sector reported the lowest.

Minister Melanie Mark Announces Departure
Yesterday, Premier John Horgan announced that the Hon. Melanie Mark would be stepping down from her position as Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, & Sport. Her porfolia will be assumed by Minister Lisa Beare, Minister of Citizens' Services.

The BC Hotel Association would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Minister Mark for her sincere dedication to our accommodation and tourism sector and for being a strong, diligent, and vivacious advocate for our industry. We also welcome Minister Lisa Beare and look forward to working with her to further support the best interests of our accommodation community.
