BCHA Information Session
Understanding Bill 10
When passed, Bill 10 will remove the democratic protection of a secret ballot vote for union certification, replacing it with a card-based system.

To offer education, resources, and support for members, the BCHA is hosting an information session alongside the experts at Pulver Crawford Munroe LLP, a Vancouver-based law firm that practices exclusively in labour and employment law. During this session, we will provide a toolkit for members, while explore actions that can be taken, both immediately and in the future, answering questions that include:
  • What action can be taking prior to a Union organizing drive?
  • How does a union “get in” to a company?
  • What does certification mean? What is the process?
  • What can management do or say during an organizing drive?
  • What should management NOT do or say during an organizing drive?

Minute HAC Labour Survey
The Government has acknowledged that the labour crisis is a major barrier to the recovery of the economy. The federal Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program has been identified as one possible vehicle that has the potential to open up sizeable access to foreign workers.

We were delighted to see the Government respond to recommendations with their recently announced changes which made the program more accessible, however we are hearing that applications are still stuck in processing.

In advance of a meeting with key government officials next week, the Hotel Association of Canada needs you to complete a 2 minute survey so we can determine if these changes are having the intended impact in this urgent environment. We will also use this data in our media work.
Please note, the survey will close on May 26th, at 5 PM.
"Checking In" Down South | Travel Pulse Check via AHLA
Our counterparts at the American Hotel & Lodging Association, recently conducted a survey to better understand American travel patterns this summer. Read the article here. Of the key highlights, respondents indicated that gas prices and inflation will impact their summer travel decisions.

  • 90% say gas prices are a consideration in deciding whether to travel in the next three months (50% major consideration, 23% moderate consideration, 17% slight consideration, 10% not a consideration)
  • 82% say gas prices will have at least some impact on their travel destination(s) (37% major impact, 29% moderate impact, 16% slight impact, 17% no impact)
  • Due to current gas prices, 57% are likely to take fewer leisure trips, 54% are likely to take shorter leisure trips, 44% are likely to postpone trips, and 33% are likely to cancel with no plans to reschedule
  • 90% say inflation is a consideration in deciding whether to travel in the next three months (39% major consideration, 31% moderate consideration, 20% slight consideration, 10% not a consideration

In another survey published by ValuePenguin, inflation was also cited to be the main cauve of changed plans. According the survey, Americans Will Take Fewer Trips but Plan to Spend More Money While on Vacation
Recruitment Support | go2HR HR Toolkit

Passport Application Backlog
Government Responds
In response to an unprecedented backlog of passport applications, Service Canada recently stated it has hired 600 new employees specifically to support the processing of passport applications, opened more dedicated passport intake counters in over 300 Service Canada Centres, opened additional processing hubs, and created a “new workload management and processing technology” intended to increase efficiency. The office also launched a new an online appointment-booking tool.

Service Canada stated that its ability to serve Canadians was affected by the “unprecedented volume” of applications as travel re-opened, as well as its requirement to impose in-person capacity limits for both clients and staff inside Service Canada Centres.
For a limited-time basis, go2HR is offering four training courses through the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), free for BC’s tourism industry.

The courses are helpful for anyone who wants to know more about managing stress at the workplace or how to respond to difficult customer interactions, and employees responsible for hazard identification or implementing a violence prevention policy at your workplace.
