Hottest Aboriginal Female Performers to Rock Book-Latch

Performing at Calvin Helin's "book-latch"-the launching of fourth book Dances with Spirits-will be some of Canada's most exciting female Aboriginal performers.

Akina Shirt

Songstress Akina Shirt is a vocalist originally from Saddle Lake Cree Nation in Alberta. At only 20 years of age, Akina is already a stage veteran who is making music as her career. Her biggest stages to date are CBC Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts, where she performed O' Canada in Cree for the Calgary Flames game at the of age 13, becoming the first person to sing our national anthem in a language other than French and English at an NHL game.

Akina was the youngest person to receive an Aboriginal Role Model Award for music in 2011 and became spokesperson for Spirit of Aboriginal Youth (SAY) Magazine.

Akina has big dreams and has applied to UBC School of Music for fall studies and her goal is to transfer to Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts in the UK in 2016. LIPA is a school founded by Sir Paul McCartney of The Beatles, who are one of Akina's biggest inspirations.

Janet Panic
If you miss that act don't panic because sensational Metis artist Janet Panic will soothe your soul with the beautiful music that saw her nominated for a 2013 Juno Award for best Aboriginal Album (for 'Samples'), having won Best Acoustic Album in 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Choice Awards, and a nomination for a 2011 Canadian Folk Music Award. At the end of the evening, the thing you will remember is the songs - and her name. (And yes, that's her real name!)
Kinnie Starr
The next performer is a real star - Kinnie Starr. She is a trusted guide and fearless explorer. Poet, pundit, speaker. Provocateur, rapper, singer. Starr is a name respected in almost any cultural or artistic conversation concerning hip hop, folk and pop music, art, activism and critical thinking. Her familiar and extraordinary voice continues to provoke new thought and an evolved understanding of love, sex, identity, water rights and more.

2014/2015 is the next phase of her exciting journey as a music artist, and as a speaker. With a new release, "Kiss It", under her belt, a tweet from Starr's hero Maude Barlow, more production work completed, an anthemic water song ready for release, and a new record label to call home, Kinnie Starr is poised to soar in unexpected ways. Again.

It's not too late to join us in our celebration! We hope to see you at our Book-Latch.

Sincerely,
