Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
Hello Beautiful Parents, Caregivers, Siblings & More - Who love and care for amazing Black Children, Youth & Adults experiencing Autism & Developmental differences.
It’s Ardena, momma to a beautiful Black boy on the Autism Spectrum. Our Parenting Black Children’s (PBC) program mission is to Decrease Disparities & Increase Access to Information & Resources for Black/African American families.
10 years ago, I knew little to nothing about Autism and Developmental Disabilities but had to quickly learn after my son's diagnosis. However, there were several systems of care that could have shared the information. Our communities have and continue to experience racial trauma associated with disparities and deficits in systems of care and this program is helping to make a difference. Awareness is Key but Access is Essential so that our families may thrive in home, school and community. Every March, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) lead Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM). The campaign highlights how people with and without disabilities come together to form strong communities. See the list of resources to support individuals and families experiencing I/DD provided NACDD in the section below.
