New Guidelines: Will They Matter?

Director of Inclusive Education Canada, Dr. Gordon L. Porter, reflects on the Ontario Human Rights Commission's new education policy "Accessible education for students with disabilities".

The Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) is giving it a second try. Last week they issued new Guidelines on inclusive education, "Accessible education for students with disabilities". The Commission tried before in 2004. Many would argue that effort had little practical effect. Let's hope it turns out better with this 2018 version!

PRESS RELEASE: Canada's Medical Assistance in Dying Regulations Fall Short

Toronto, ON - The Canadian Association for Community Living (CACL) and the Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD) strongly call on the federal government to strengthen the monitoring system for medical assistance in dying (MAiD). As they stand, the just-published MAiD regulations to come into effect November 1, won't safeguard people who could be vulnerable under the system. They don't meet the objectives of the MAiD legislation for robust protections. More work needs to be done.

Michael Bach Headshot
"The state should not rely entirely on families to give informal support"

This Q&A comes from Inclusion Europe, who met with Michael Bach, Managing Director at IRIS, to learn more about the most recent good practices on legal capacity.

Q: How can we ensure legal capacity is on the political agenda?

A: It is key to involve civil society, to build partnerships and alliances to get this topic on the political agenda... CACL joined forces with associations representing people with mental health issues or seniors, as well as with allied disability rights organisations, including organisations representing people with physical disabilities, brain injuries and autism. In this way, we established a shared understanding that we needed to reform the legal capacity system. What we have been focusing on is for all people to enjoy legal capacity.
