NYMC to Celebrate Visionary Public Health Leaders at Annual Founder’s Dinner
NYMC is pleased to announce the 2024 Founder's Dinner will be celebrated on Thursday, September 26, honoring Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.M.S., M.B.A., FAAP, FACPM, dean of SHSP, vice president for government affairs and professor of public health, pediatrics, and environmental health science; Sherlita Amler, M.D., M.S, Ed.S., R.N., F.A.A.P., C.E.M., commissioner of health for Westchester County, adjunct professor of public health and clinical associate professor of pediatrics; and Edward Chew, M.D. ‘03, FACEP, chief executive officer for Physician Affiliate Group of New York, chief of emergency medicine and deputy chief medical officer of Harlem Hospital, and a member of the NYMC Board of Advisors, for their outstanding contributions to medicine, public health, and education at the Surf Club on the Sound in New Rochelle.

Dr. Vikas Grover Named Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences
Vikas Grover, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, was appointed chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences effective September 1. He will continue to serve as the chief of the Division of Speech-Language Pathology, in addition to associate professor of speech-language pathology and director of speech perception and production. Dr. Grover joined NYMC in 2018 and continues to be a knowledgeable and valuable leader in the SHSP. “Dr. Grover has shown exceptional capabilities in leadership and innovative strategies to improve program effectiveness,” said Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., dean of the SHSP and vice president for government affairs. “He has an interprofessional outlook, in particular, that will make him effective in leading our degree programs in therapeutic specialties.”

NYMC Club Fair 2024 Highlights Student Involvement and Inclusion
The Club Fair 2024 was a resounding success, with more than 100 clubs drawing hundreds of students to tables spread across four venues: the cafeteria, BSB and MEC lobbies, and the MEC plaza on August 29. The event featured snacks, giveaways, and a surprise concert by the Medical Musicians. Attendees explored a wide array of student clubs and organizations at NYMC, representing diverse interests in career development, advocacy, religion, culture, and recreation.

COVID-19 Symptoms During the Omicron Surge Differ Between Boosted and Vaccinated Non-Boosted Individuals
Those vaccinated against COVID-19 who had also received the booster vaccine had a significantly lower frequency of body and muscle aches but a significantly higher frequency of nasal congestion and sore throat than those vaccinated who had not received the booster vaccine, according to a new study by NYMC faculty, including Marisa Montecalvo, M.D., professor of medicine, published in Vaccines.

NYMC Enhances Campus Parking with New Parking Lot
In an ongoing effort to improve campus accessibility and convenience and accommodate the growing needs of the campus community, NYMC is pleased to announce the addition of a new parking lot on Old Farm Road, located adjacent to the SHSP building. This new parking facility adds 65 parking spaces, including three accessible ones for NYMC and TCDM employees. A maroon oval-shaped parking permit must be displayed on the rear right window to park in this lot. Any violations or vehicles without a proper parking permit displayed may be booted or towed at the owner's expense. Guidelines for parking on campus are available on the NYMC website.

SOM Student Advances Reproductive Health Science on the Global Stage
Olena Kocur, SOM Class of 2027, is passionate about reproductive health and science. That passion has resulted in multiple publications in medical journals and most recently three poster presentations at the 40th Annual Meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Amsterdam.

Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., M.P.H. '23, GSBMS dean, professor of cell biology and anatomy, and interim chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, was appointed to a five-year term on the editorial board of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, published by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). Dr. Holz, who is a fellow of ASBMB, was also elected to the membership committee of the ASBMB for a three-year term.
