NYMC Goes Gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
On September 11, the NYMC community united in solidarity, wearing gold to support Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and to recognize the work of Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and of cell biology and anatomy, and his team's significant contributions to pediatric oncology and dedication to advancing childhood cancer research that have had a profound impact on both the academic and medical communities.

NYMC Welcomes First-Year Students to SHSP
NYMC recently welcomed more than 150 first-year students to the SHSP. Students who are beginning their education in public health, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, participated in orientation sessions covering health services, student support, professionalism, upcoming courses, managing bias in health care,
and financial planning.

Meghan Drummond, Ph.D., Presents at the Neighborhood Science Seminar Series
Meghan Drummond, Ph.D., director of auditory sciences at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, described the development of a gene therapy designed to provide normal hearing thresholds after the administration of a single treatment during NYMC's and Regeneron's Neighborhood Science Seminar Series on September 11, on Regeneron's campus. The event was moderated by Salomon Amar, D.D.S., Ph.D., vice president for research and professor of pharmacology and of pathology, microbiology and immunology, and senior vice president for research affairs at Touro University; and Brian Zambrowicz, Ph.D., executive vice president, functional genomics and chief, VelociGene® operations at Regeneron.

Shock Index Critical Predictor of Outcomes for Elderly Trauma Patients
Shock index, a known indicator of unfavorable outcomes in trauma, was found to be a more robust predictor of prognosis in geriatric patients with severe trauma as compared to younger patients in a new study by NYMC faculty, including Kartik Prabhakaran, M.D., professor of surgery, that was recently published in The Journal of Surgical Research.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa Presents Significant Health Challenge for Marginalized Populations
Hidradenitis Suppurativa, a persistent and sometimes debilitating inflammatory skin condition, presents a significant health challenge due to its high prevalence of comorbidities and disproportionate impact on marginalized populations, according to a study conducted by NYMC students, faculty, and residents, including Lauren Fleshner, M.Sc., SOM Class of 2027, lead author of the study.

Adam D. Hammerman, M.B.A., CNE, vice president and chief financial officer, served as host chair of the Jewish Business Network Gabelli Executive Business Roundtable sponsored by TU, NYMC, and TCDM on September 10. The meeting was an interactive discussion on adopting a positive approach to countering anti-Semitic rhetoric in both college campuses and workplaces and exploring the importance of education and maintaining an inclusive workplace environment and the broader implications for free speech.

September 15 through October 15 marks Hispanic Heritage Month. Adolfo Varona, M.D., was the College’s first Hispanic faculty member, who taught histology at NYMC in the 1870s and actively participated in Cuba’s fight for independence from Spain—as did Francisco Felix Mendoza, M.D., Class of 1876, the College’s first Hispanic graduate. Dr. Mendoza, who also hailed from Cuba, went on to serve as one of the first consular staff for the newly independent Republic of Cuba in 1902, while continuing to practice medicine in Tampa, Florida.
