Students Honor First Patients During Convocation of Thanks
Students in the SOM and SHSP honored their first patients during the annual Convocation of Thanks on April 28, when they had the opportunity to express their appreciation to the families of those who had donated their bodies to NYMC for anatomical studies. During the touching and heartfelt tributes, first-year medical students and SLP and PT students used reflection, music, art and poetry to honor those individuals who had made such an impact on both their gross anatomy lab experience and on them as future clinicians. NYMC Shines at TU Research Day
TU hosted their second institution-wide Research Day for the Touro University community on May 2 at the new Cross River Campus in Times Square. Addressing the power of collaboration and commitment to intellectual curiosity and scientific advancement, the event celebrated the preeminent faculty research publications in 2020 and student research project posters. NYMC swept the stage at Research Day, selected to present 10 of the 57 total abstracts chosen. Class of 2025 SOM students Mikaela Glass and Sarah Rubin, Ph.D. candidates in pathology, microbiology and immunology Tara Jarboe and Nicole DeSouza, were awarded for their outstanding student posters. Sangmi Chun, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, neurology and psychiatry and behavioral sciences, was recognized for her publication and Patric K. Stanton, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy and neurology, and Christopher Whitehurst, M.S., Ph.D., assistant professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology and biochemistry and molecular biology, were recipients of the Touro University-Lovelace Biomedical Research Institute Innovative Intramural Research Grant Program. Medical Students Recognized for Humanism at Induction Ceremony
More than 30 students from the SOM Class of 2024 were recognized as exemplars of humanism during the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) Induction Ceremony on April 27 in Skyline Dining Room. A community of medical student and physician leaders who have been selected by their peers for their compassionate patient care, GHHS reinforces and supports the importance of human connection in health care. Founded in 2002, GHHS now has more than 180 chapters in medical schools and residency programs and more than 45,000 members. Read the full story on the GHHS Induction Ceremony.

Chancellor Hosts Field Trip to The Cushing Center at Yale University
Members of the NYMC community joined Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, for a field trip on April 30 to The Cushing Center at Yale University School of Medicine to view an archival collection of more than 2,200 case studies, which includes human whole brain specimens, tumor specimens, microscopic slides, notes, journal excerpts and more than 15,000 photographic negatives dating from the late 1800s to 1936 at the Harvey Cushing Center. The group learned first hand about the life and work of Harvey Cushing, a surgeon, author, collector and bibliophile. The day concluded with a walking tour of the Yale campus led by Dr. Halperin, Yale School of Medicine Class of 1979.

Internationally Acclaimed Cardiologist Dr. Fuster Set to Address DelGuercio Day
Valentin Fuster, M.D., Ph.D., president of Mount Sinai Heart and physician-in-chief of The Mount Sinai Hospital, will give the keynote presentation at the 20th Annual Louis R.M. DelGuercio, M.D., Distinguished Visiting Professorship and Research Day on Wednesday, May 24, at the Westchester Medical Center Taylor Conference Room. A preeminent leader in cardiovascular medicine, Dr. Fuster is also the general director of the National Center for Cardiovascular Research in Madrid, Spain. Read the full story on Dr. Fuster.
