Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Celebrates the Unveiling of the Phillip Capozzi, M.D., Library
It was a grand occasion on May 20 for the NYMC and TU community, when the Health Sciences Library was officially renamed the Phillip Capozzi, M.D., Library, after Philip D. Capozzi, M.D. ’96, center. Dr. Capozzi’s legacy gift to NYMC will enable the library to continue its tradition of being a dedicated communal learning space. Read the full article and view the photo gallery and video.

Center for Disaster Medicine Hosts Lifesaving Trainings for Students and Staff
The Center for Disaster Medicine hosted trainings on May 10 and 12 for more than 70 staff members, students and College public safety officers. The trainings covered Stop the Bleed, which shows how to properly apply tourniquets and gauzes to severe wounds, and the administration of naloxone, a drug used to help reverse opioid overdoses. NYMC and TU Host 19th COVID-19 Symposium
Leadership from NYMC and TU hosted the 19th COVID-19 Symposium, which featured presentations by New York and New Jersey public health officials and NYMC faculty, covering topics including the importance of public health not only within the scope of the pandemic, but as society moves forward in providing a more equitable, healthy environment for all communities. Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.Phil., CHES, professor of public health and global health director, was recognized with a citation from Jenifer Rajkumar, New York State Assembly Member, 38th District, on the occasion of the Global Hindu Summit. She was honored for being a leader in medicine; advancing spiritual, mental and physical wellbeing; serving as an advisor and trustee of the World Yoga Community; and serving as a role model to all women in medicine.

Katharine Yamulla, M.A., CHSE, center, senior director of competency-based assessment and clinical skills education and director of the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center (CSSC), was honored by the Children’s Dream Foundation (CDF) at their 30th anniversary celebration on May 13, at the Shenorock Shore Club in Rye, New York. Ms. Yamulla received the Educational Service Award for developing an innovative clinical skills curriculum at NYMC that champions humanistic patient care and promotes positive pediatric outcomes in the Hudson Valley. The CDF provides grants to health care organizations to ensure that the most advanced pediatric medical care, especially emergency services, is available to all children in the Hudson Valley. Ms. Yamulla has worked very closely with the CDF for more than five years and has aided NYMC in being grant recipients of more than $75,000 in simulation equipment. In 2021, the CDF provided funding to the CSSC to purchase an infant lumbar simulator, an adolescent lumbar puncture and epidural system with a simulated IV bag, and a pediatric ultrasound central line and regional anesthesia training model. Ms. Yamulla was joined by CDF board members, Erik Larsen, M.D., and Ida Doctor.

Taylor Gerber, M.P.H. Candidate, Completes Highly Competitive Emergency Management Fellowship
Taylor Gerber, an M.P.H. student in health policy and management and the advanced certificate in emergency management program set to graduate on May 24, successfully completed an internship with the NYC Department of Education (DOE) Department of Emergency Management through the John D. Solomon Fellowship for Public Service—the first student fellowship with the City devoted specifically to emergency management. Ms. Gerber was one of only ten graduate students in the NYC area selected to complete a nine-month fellowship in an agency of a NYC government or a nonprofit organization. During her time at the DOE, Ms. Gerber worked hands-on with members of the DOE emergency management team to help ensure NYC schools had proper emergency plans in place and were up to code for accessibility. Ms. Gerber shared an in-depth look at her time in the DOE.

Aviva C. Berkowitz, M.D., Focuses on Humanism in Oncology
Like many physicians Aviva C. Berkowitz, M.D., clinical assistant professor of radiation medicine, knew she wanted to become one from a young age. However, Dr. Berkowitz had a unique perspective to what life as a medical student and physician entailed, as four of her older siblings earned their M.D.s. Now focused on radiation medicine, Dr. Berkowitz, who joined the faculty in July 2021, takes great pride in being someone that patients with cancer can lean on.
