Kenneth Theobalds, a member of NYMC’s Board of Trustees and president and managing partner of RiverRun Partners LLC, is set to be honored at the College’s annual golf tournament and reception on June 17 at The Saint Andrew's Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. Dylan Kwart, Ph.D., M.Sc., Presents at the Neighborhood Science Seminar Series
Dylan Kwart, Ph.D., M.Sc., center, principal scientist at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases Therapeutic, shared his innovative research during the Neighborhood Science Seminar Series sponsored by NYMC and Regeneron on June 5, at the BioInc@NYMC Lounge. Dr. Kwart, who studies how the innate and adaptive immune systems function to detect and respond to cancer, highlighted his work aimed at unpacking the complex heterogeneity of monocytes in the tumor microenvironment. During his presentation, he described the novel role of cancer cell-derived type I interferons in driving immunostimulatory tumor monocyte polarization. The event was moderated by Salomon Amar, D.D.S., Ph.D., right, vice president for research and professor of pharmacology and of pathology, microbiology and immunology, and senior vice president for research affairs at Touro University, and Brian Zambrowicz, Ph.D., left, executive vice president, functional genomics and chief, VelociGene® operations at Regeneron.

Construction on the MEC Roadway
The College will be enhancing parking on the MEC Roadway to double the amount of visitor parking. Construction began on June 5 and will continue for a few weeks. The road will remain open to vehicles, but there will be no parking on the MEC Roadway due to the extensive excavation work. When walking in this area, please use the sidewalk.

Metropolitan Hospital Center Research Day Highlights NYMC Residents Work
Residents in the NYMC-sponsored residency programs at New York Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan spotlighted their research during the annual Research Day on May 1. From the more than 50 abstracts submitted, three residents were chosen as recipients of Dean’s Awards and presented their research at the event. First place was awarded to Wael Abdelmottaleb, M.D., M.Sc., center, a third-year internal medicine resident, seen with Jennifer Salcedo, M.D., M.P.H., right, dean of graduate medical education, designated institutional official, and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and John T. Pellicone, M.D., left, chief medical officer at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, associate dean for medical education at Metropolitan and assistant professor of medicine, for a quality improvement project that looked at EKG interpretation awareness among internal medicine residents. Second place went to Robert Leger, M.D., a third-year psychiatry resident, for his research on the effects of anticholinergic burden on patients with primary psychotic patients. Maryia Martynenka, M.D., a first-year pediatrics resident, took third place for her project on improving the quality of pediatric pain management during needle-related procedures.

Socioeconomic Disparities Exist in Treatment of Teen Femoral Fractures
Children and adolescents from poor socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to experience delayed treatment for femoral fractures leading to worse outcomes and increased healthcare costs according to a new study by NYMC faculty and student researchers, including Irim Salik, M.D., right, associate professor of anesthesiology and senior author of the study, and Sima Vazquez, M.D. '24, M.S., left, who recently published in Injury.

Fawaz Al-Mufti, M.D., right, associate professor of neurology, neurosurgery, and radiology, was elected global chair of the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology 's (SVIN) Mission Thrombectomy, a global non-profit that aims to increase access to endovascular stroke thrombectomy, a life-saving intervention. He was also an invited speaker at the World Health Organization’s (WHO) World Health Assembly Satellite event for SVIN's Mission Thrombectomy in Geneva on May 26. Bruno S. Villazhinay Matute, M.P.H. '22, senior administrator in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and instructor of obstetrics and gynecology, who is a member of the Westchester County LGBTQ Advisory Board, was an invited speaker at the Town of Bedford Pride Ceremony and Flag Raising on June 1. He was also an invited speaker and participant at the White Plains celebration of Pride Month and helped raise the Progress Pride Flag over the Michaelian Office Building on June 2. At the event Rebecca Glassman, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, received a Leadership Award from the Westchester County LGBTQ+ Advisory Board.

The Center for Disaster Medicine hosted Homeland Security funded training on June 5 – 7, conducted by the Louisiana State University National Center Center for Biomedical Research and Testing Academy of Counterterrorist Education (LSU NCBRT/ACE) in Active Threat On Campus and Campus Active Shooter Integrated Response. Thirty first responders including law enforcement, fire service, and EMS, and immediate responders including bystanders and security personnel were trained on working together to "Stop the Killing and Stop the Dying."
