Golf Outing Supports Student Scholarships 

Torrential thunderstorms couldn’t dampen the spirit at the NYMC golf outing and reception on June 26. While play was suspended for a time due to the weather, 85 golfers hit the links and tested their skills in a putting contest and closest to the pin contest at Saint Andrew's Golf Course in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. An evening reception honored Steven Lansman, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Surgery at NYMC, and Rubén A. Medina, M.B.A., M.P.H., founder of RC Solutions, Inc. and member of the NYMC Board of Advisors. The third annual golf outing raised $158,000 and was chaired by Martin Katzenstein, M.D. '78, assistant dean for clinical affiliations, associate professor of pediatrics and chair of the Board of Advisors, and was sponsored by the Board of Advisors. “It was wonderful to see the NYMC community come out for the golf tournament and support student scholarships. Sambit Mohapatra, Ph.D., M.S., PT, is Named Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences

Sambit Mohapatra, Ph.D., M.S., PT, has been named chair of the newly designed Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at NYMC SHSP. Dr. Mohapatra will be responsible for the oversight of the Divisions of Physical Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology. He joins NYMC after serving as an associate professor and interim program director of the Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Science at the University of Vermont (UVM). At UVM, he increased the number of submitted applications to the physical therapy program by 30 percent, while significantly reducing the total cost for a Doctor of Physical Therapy education. Read the full story about Dr. Mohapatra.

Drs. Abraham and Moscatello Return to Ukraine to Train Reconstructive Plastic Surgeons 

Manoj T. Abraham, M.D., FACS, clinical associate professor of otolaryngology, and Augustine Moscatello, M.D., M.S., professor of clinical otolaryngology and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology, returned to Ukraine on April 20 for a 10-day mission trip to care for the wounded Ukrainians and train local doctors in complex face and neck reconstructive surgeries at a military hospital in Lviv. Read the full story about the mission trip.

CDM Receives Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education Accreditation 

The Center for Disaster Medicine has received one-year provisional accreditation through June 20, 2024, from the Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE). The accreditation recognizes the CDM as having met all the requirements for awarding CAPCE accreditation for EMS Continuing education activities. A full three-year accreditation will be granted after a successful site visit without deficiencies.   

Chancellor Halperin Hosts Town Hall Meeting

Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., hosted a town hall meeting on June 27 to give a state-of-the-campus update on NYMC and TCDM. The topics covered included profiles of the entering M.D., D.D.S. and D.P.T. classes; commencement social media engagement; signage at NYC Health + Hospitals Metropolitan; parking on campus; accreditation updates on Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and Liaison Committee on Medical Education; and the Founder’s Dinner. View the town hall meeting video.

NYMC and TU Hosts Webinar Series: “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web”

NYMC and TU faculty experts gave their advice on popular topics in medicine at the webinar, “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web,” on June 29. The event, hosted by Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer of NYMC, was followed by a question-and-answer session moderated by Alan Kadish, M.D., president of NYMC and TU. Anitha Srinivasan, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of surgery, discussed the current recommendations for mammography screenings; Michael J. Trepal, D.P.M., FACFAS, vice president for academic affairs, dean and chief academic officer at New York College of Podiatric Medicine, presented a panel on managing onychomycosis; and Lori Solomon, M.D. '99, M.P.H. ’09, chair and clinical associate professor of family and community medicine and director of the Family Health Center, explained the importance of a family medical history. Mill Etienne, M.D. ’02, M.P.H., FAAN, FAES, vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion, associate dean for student affairs, associate professor of neurology and medicine, and Edward Lebovics, M.D., professor of medicine and the Sarah C. NYMC Presents, "Breaking the Color Code in the Health Care System"

NYMC’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion presented, “Breaking the Color Code in the Health Care System,” on June 21 in the Nevins Auditorium, featuring faculty, guest and student presenters who discussed the history of color code in medicine, raised awareness of current color code practices and ways to make changes to the practice for the future. The event was moderated by Mill Etienne, M.D., M.P.H., FAAN, FAES, (right), vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion, associate dean for student affairs, and associate professor of neurology and medicine, and Libor Velíšek, M.D., Ph.D., (left), assistant dean for basic medical sciences in the School of Medicine, director of the M.D./Ph.D. Program and professor of cell biology and anatomy, neurology and of pediatrics. Paving Improves Sunshine Cottage Parking Lots

The front and rear parking lots of Sunshine Cottage were recently paved to walk as well as enhance the overall look of the Administration Building. The circular driveway and adjacent parking spaces and the entire rear lot were closed for several days for the construction. This comes after the increase in parking spaces behind 7 Dana Road. "NYMC is committed to making our campus safer and more secure. Some recent projects include adding more surveillance cameras, installing card swipe locks that limit public access to our private offices at 19 Skyline Drive, creating an app to communicate directly with Public Safety, and expanding student parking on campus by over 200 spaces," said Robert Lancia, M.A., director of the Office of Public Safety.
