Student Clinician Ceremony Marks Start of Clinical Years for SOM Class of 2024


Members of the SOM Class of 2024 celebrated the start of their clinical years on June 30, at a special ceremony in the John W. Nevins, M.D. '44 Auditorium. During the ceremony, the students once again recited the oath that they crafted for their White Coat Ceremony when they embarked on their studies at NYMC. The ceremony was created by the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) to mark the important transition from pre-clinical to clinical years. Read the full article on the Student Clinician Ceremony.

NYMC and TU Host 20th COVID-19 Symposium

Student Housing Superintendent Visar Zeka Brings More Than 15 Years of Experience to NYMC


The maintenance team in student housing at NYMC plays an important role in student campus life—addressing and remedying any issues that may arise in the student residence halls, Grasslands I and II. Visar Zeka, who has more than 15 years of experience in property management, joined the NYMC community in January, as superintendent for student housing. He shared some insight into his responsibilities and how he and his team help ensure students can focus on their studies in a comfortable and safe environment. Read the full Q&A with Mr. Zeka..

ACCOLADES

Jose Dominguez, M.D., right, a PGY-6 resident in the Department of Neurosurgery, was awarded second-place for his presentation, “Role of Green Tea Catechin. Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) and mTOR Inhibitor PP242 in the Treatment of Spinal Cord Injury” at the New York Society for Neurosurgery’s Resident Research Night on July 14, in New York City. His work was done under the mentorship of Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal, Ph.D., research associate professor of neurosurgery.

Irina Gelman, D.P.M., M.P.H., distinguished visiting professor in the Department of Public Health, has been named commissioner of health for Nassau County. She previously served as commissioner of health for Orange County.

Cara Grimes, M.D., third from left, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and of urology, was recognized for the most impactful research article of 2020 by the International Urogynecological Association (IUGA) on June 17, during the IUGA’s annual business meeting in Austin, Texas. Dr. Grimes and her fellow researchers from across the country received the Oscar Contreras Ortiz Award for their articleA Guide for Urogynecologic Patient Care Utilizing Telemedicine During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Review of Existing Evidence,” which was published in the International Urogynecology Journal in June 2020.

Anish R. Maskey, a Ph.D. candidate in the laboratory of XiuMin, Li, M.D., M.S., professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology, presented a poster, "Computational analysis to define pathways underlying 7,4 dihydroxy flavone effect on eosinophilic esophagitis: ex-vivo validation in human esophagus biopsies," at EOS Connection 2022, the annual patient-education conference organized by American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders (APFED). The conference was a hybrid event in San Diego from July 7-9 and Mr. Maskey presented virtually.
