Neil W. Schluger, M.D., Named Dean of the School of Medicine
NYMC appoints its very own Neil W. Schluger, M.D., Barbara and William Rosenthal Chair of the Department of Medicine and professor of medicine, as the dean of the SOM. The search comes to an end as the faculty/student search committee spent eight months interviewing prospective candidates from across the country to succeed Jerry L. Nadler, M.D., who stepped down as dean in January 2023 following the death of his beloved wife and supporter of the SOM, Mary Latona Nadler. Dr. Schluger assumes his new duties on August 15. Medical Students Mark Transition to Clinical Practice
Members of the SOM Class of 2025 marked their transition from pre-clinical studies to full-time clinical practice and the start of their third-year clerkships during the Gold Humanism Honor Society Student Clinician Ceremony in Nevins Auditorium on June 29. The Student Clinician Ceremony was designed by the Gold Foundation to provide support for medical students as they begin their clinical years and emphasize the importance of providing compassionate, collaborative and scientifically excellent care to patients. CSSC Hosts High School Students for Medical School for a Day
NYMC hosted the Envision by World Strides Advanced Medicine and Health Care Program on June 19, 29, and July 11 and 25. Since 2015, high school students from around the country visit the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center (CSSC) to experience “medical school for a day.” Each student rotates between three stations consisting of a SimMan Cardio Pulmonary Module, a HEENT Physical Exam Teaching Session, and Clue: The Great Diagnostic Mystery Game. “It has been an honor to design this program for Envision students throughout the years,” said Katharine Yamulla, M.A., director of the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center and senior director of Competency Based Assessment. “This diverse and talented pool of junior learners consistently rave that our CSSC immersive experience is the highlight of their ten-day program. Many students expressed how excited they are to one day apply to NYMC for medical school.” Envision is an educational company that offers immersive experiences for students interested in medicine, engineering, law and crime scene investigation, national security, aerospace and aviation.

NYMC Implements Sick Time Policy
Effective for fiscal year 2024, NYMC has implemented a sick time policy. The new policy provides for paid sick time for all eligible employees in coordination with the current paid time off program. Furthermore, this policy ensures compliance with New York State regulations. The policy is located on the TouroOne portal, in the Employee tab, listed under Human Resources. The SHSP Office of Admissions Guides Students to Their Futures in Public Health and Rehabilitation Science
The SHSP Office of Admissions shows prospective students what NYMC has to offer and guides them through the application process. With the different enrollment times throughout the year for the programs in speech-language pathology, physical therapy and public health, the Office of Admissions works endlessly to support students with their career goals. Vishnu Chaturvedi, Ph.D., FECMM, professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology, serves as editor-in-chief for Mycopathologia, the official journal of the International Union of Microbiological Societies and a Springer Nature publication. This year the publication received a high impact factor and ranked in the first quartile of mycology journals.

It is the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. Rachmiel Levine, M.D., chairman of the Department of Medicine from 1960 to 1969, was a leader in diabetes research. He genetically engineered E. coli to produce human insulin, which led to the development of the first genetically engineered health care product approved by the FDA.
