NYMC AMWA Chapter Hosts Medical Mavens Workshop
The NYMC chapter of the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) hosted the Medical Mavens Workshop for more than 20 high school students at the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center on December 4 to give them an introduction on what it is like to be a medical student. The evening event was a partnership with the City of White Plains Youth Bureau, Girls Inc., and the White Plains Hospital Volunteer Department. A nearly 1:1 ratio between medical student volunteers and high school students, created an intimate mentorship space for the young women to ask questions about their future career paths. Jeanne M. Wilson, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics and phase one curriculum co-director, and Michelle Foard, educational coordinator, presided over the workshop which included rotations through four stations: SimMan, Harvey, eye task trainers, and ear task trainers with reflex hammers and tuning forks. Following dinner, the students got a glimpse of their future and posed for photos donning white coats. Students left with a brochure containing medical student volunteer contact information for future questions and advice.
