SOM Class of 2027 Dons White Coats for the First Time


Members of the SOM Class of 2027 marked a milestone in their medical education as they donned their white coats for the first time during the White Coat Ceremony at SUNY Purchase on July 28. A long-held tradition at NYMC, the White Coat Ceremony began in 1993 at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons to emphasize the importance of professionalism and humanism in medicine at the beginning of medical school. Dr. Blicharz is Named Director of Student Academic Support


John Blicharz, Ph.D., joins the NYMC community as the director of the Office of Student Academic Support, whose mission is to provide academic support services to students at NYMC and TCDM. The office offers academic coaching for students, creates and delivers workshops and resources on study strategies, time management, in-house and board/licensure exam preparations as well as writing workshops and one-on-one writing assistance. The office also offers a Peer Learning Partner Program, which is a tutoring service for students. The office assists students with disabilities ensuring that reasonable student-specific accommodations are available throughout their program of study. Read the full story on Dr. Blicharz.

NYMC Faculty Ranks in Best Scientists in Medicine List


NYMC faculty were recognized as the best researchers in medicine in the world, according to Research.com. The list is based on bibliometric data from a wide range of data sources, including OpenAlex and CrossRef, gathered on December 21, 2022. Position in the ranking is based on a scientist's D-index (Discipline H-index), which includes publications and citation values for an examined discipline.

Professor Xiu-Min Li, M.D., M.S., and Devora Loike-Weinstein, SOM Class of 2026, are researching the therapeutic potential of traditional Chinese medicine compounds in preventing asthma, eczema and food anaphylaxis. View the video.

ACCOLADES

Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D., the Sidney E. Frank Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, was an invited speaker at the 13th International Neuropeptide Y Research Conference, July 16-19, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She gave a symposium presentation on “Intranasal NPY or Selective Agonists to Treat Traumatic Stress-triggered Impairments in Male and Female Rats” in the session on Therapeutics.

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety recently toured the Westchester County composting facility where NYMC resident hall food scraps are composted. Our food scraps are turned into a superior organic soil conditioner that can be used in gardens and landscaping.
