CDM Provided Summer Trainings
The Center for Disaster Medicine completed another Summer Emergency Medicine Fellowship with members of the SOM Class of 2027 from June 24 through July 19. Students had the opportunity to rotate through the Emergency Department at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan in New York City, visit the Institute for Medical Simulation and Advanced Learning Center at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, and learn basic and advanced patient care skills taking the American Red Cross Advanced Life Support and Pediatric Life Support courses along with the Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support course from the National Association of EMTs. The CDM also hosted the Active Attack Integrated Response course from the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University on July 24-25. First responders from throughout the region learned the concepts and principles of how to integrate law enforcement and fire/EMS resources to effectively triage, treat, and evacuate injured people from an active shooter/hostile event incident.

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety is dedicated to ensuring a safe working environment, and provides a guide with essential tips for reading a Safety Data Sheet.
How to Read a Safety Data Sheet: A Comprehensive Guide
Safety Data Sheets (SDS), formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), are crucial documents that provide essential information about chemicals and hazardous substances. Reading an SDS is a fundamental skill for anyone working with or around hazardous chemicals. By understanding the information provided in each section and following the recommended safety precautions, you can minimize risks, protect yourself and others, and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Always prioritize safety and refer to SDS whenever handling new chemicals or encountering unfamiliar hazards in the workplace.
Key Information to Focus On:
-
Hazards: Identify the chemical’s potential hazards (e.g., flammability, toxicity, corrosivity).
-
Exposure Limits: Note exposure limits such as permissible exposure limits (PELs) and threshold limit values (TLVs).
-
First Aid: Understand first-aid procedures for exposure scenarios.
-
Handling and Storage: Follow recommended handling and storage procedures to minimize risks.
-
Personal Protection: Use appropriate PPE as recommended.
- Utilize Additional Resources:
Cross-reference the SDS with other resources such as chemical labels and workplace safety protocols.
Seek clarification from safety officers or supervisors if aspects of the SDS are unclear.
Pay attention to hazard symbols, signal words (e.g., Danger, Warning), and precautionary statements which indicate the severity of the hazard and necessary precautions.
