From the Collection of Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A.
Be sure to stop by the Chancellor's latest exhibit, presenting items of interest on the history of medicine and science displayed on the wall to the left of Doc's Café in the Basic Sciences Building. The current exhibit features the 1974 First Day Cover marking the 125th anniversary of Elizabeth Blackwell, M.D.’s graduation and the text of a letter from Margaret Munro DeLancey, which is owned by the Museum of the City of New York. It is an eyewitness account of the graduation ceremony of Dr. Blackwell, who was the first woman to earn a M.D. degree in the United States and would become the first woman on the Medical Register of the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom.

Stay protected, stay healthy, and get informed this National Immunization Awareness Month with tips and guidelines from Lori Solomon, M.D. ’99, M.P.H. ’09, chair and associate professor of family and community medicine.
National Immunization Month Tips and Guidelines
1. The influenza vaccine will be available at the end of August or beginning of September.
2. For those worried about pain or fever after an immunization, a dose of ibuprofen at the time of vaccination may help with symptoms and does not decrease the efficacy of the vaccine.
3. Everyone over six months should receive an influenza vaccine.
4. Anyone over 50 should get the shingles vaccine, which consists of two doses and is available at the Family Health Center.
5. Most people can wait until October or November to get the influenza vaccine, but people with asthma should come in earlier.
6. All children who receive vaccines in New York State have their vaccines recorded in a state immunization registry, which can be searched by a physician to see what immunizations the child needs, even if a different practice administered previous vaccines.
7. Adults can have their immunizations sent to the state immunization registry with their consent, providing an easy way to keep all vaccine records in one place, especially since care is often fragmented.
