Harmful Algae Blooms vs Other Aquatic Plants

Spot the difference! Not everything green in the water is a harmful algal bloom - here are some examples of harmful algal blooms (caused by cyanobacteria), and other common aquatic plants.

Harmful algal bloom: can have the appearance of pea soup obscuring the water.

Harmful algal bloom: can appear green, brown, rusty red, or even blue in color.

Harmful algal bloom: can look like a spill on the surface of the water.

NOT a harmful algal bloom: Aquatic green algae often appears spongy and stringy forming irregular clumps.

NOT a harmful algal bloom: Duckweed looks like tiny floating leaves often creating a solid layer on the surface of the water.

NOT a harmful algal bloom: Rooted aquatic plants grow from the lake bottom. Caution: can cause entanglement!
