Jacob is in trouble. We have traveled with him for several chapters now, and we have seen him win out over his adversaries again and again. At a young age he tricked his father Isaac and his brother into giving him the birthright and the blessing of the covenant. As an adult he tricked his father-in-law, Uncle Laban, and managed to grow for himself a large family and a large estate.
After yet another deal to keep his Uncle Laban away from him, Jacob is heading back home and will soon be in the area where his brother Esau still resides. Fearful that Esau's hatred has festered and intends to destroy him, Jacob sends an advance party with gifts, a way to butter up his brother while also saving his own skin.
But the night before Jacob is to meet his still feared brother, he meets a man who begins to wrestle him. There is not a clear victor. It is a draw, at best. But the mysterious stranger Jacob identifies as God, and out of the struggle Jacob receives a new identity, and a physical limp.
Our lives are probably also filled with wrestling matches, between family members, friends, or even within ourselves. We always exaggerate our victories as testimonies of skill and talents. We rarely describe the losses, or certainly search for excuses to justify the defeat. But it is the draws, the not quite victory, not quite defeat that have the true power to change us and impact our lives. Struggle will leave a mark, even when it comes with a blessing.

Enormous confusion exists today concerning the Bible's teaching about the future. Every natural or national disaster has its biblical scholar stating the event as the fulfillment of prophecy. As the world deals with the COVID-19 outbreak, it has re-energized interest in end-times resources, as people seek answers to the mysteries. The end times and Revelation according to Hollywood and bestselling fiction are not the End Times revealed in the Bible.
Often the topic is sensationalized by some, or simply ignored or denied as part of the Christian testimony by others.
In God's Time offers an alternative to these two poles in the debate, an alternative that is at once faithful and sane, readable and scholarly. Author Craig C. Hill encourages Christians both to take seriously and to think sensibly about the hope of God's ultimate victory. His new book includes chapters on the nature of the Bible, the history of prophecy, the meaning of apocalyptic writings, the interpretation of Daniel and Revelation, the expectations of Jesus, and the hopes of the early Christians. It also includes an appendix ("Not Left Behind") on the subject of the rapture.
