In Genesis 29 the family soap opera continues. We see more deception, more tangles and more family rivalry. For the first time we meet someone who can out trick the trickster Jacob. Uncle Laban seems to be a more cunning schemer than Jacob.
When Jacob meets Rachel at the well, not unlike how Abraham's envoy met Rebecca, he has nothing to offer but tears and a kiss, a stolen birthright and family blessing. We will never know the genuineness of Laban's negotiating seven years labor for Jacob's bride, since under the cover of night, Laban pulls a bait-and-switch with Leah being the surprise bride following consummation. When cornered about the unfair deal, Laban merely replies, "It is not our custom to give younger daughters before the firstborn." God's covenant seems to be with the younger sibling, and counter to the customs of any place. The convention remains, and Jacob agrees to the same terms for Rachel: seven years without wages, again.
Jacob's preference and Laban's hard bargain will set up a bitter rivalry between the some-how eyed Leah and the beautiful Rachel (the text is undecipherable regarding Leah's appearance or eyes). Both women were just above property status, and negotiated by their father for unpaid labor. Jacob's favoritism of brides leads to a birthrate war, where Leah, the unloved, is able to bring 10 children (with a servant, too!) and Rachel is found to be barren, bearing only 2 of her own. Another generation borne into dysfunction and rivalry.

What About the Church? Wednesday, July 29, 6 pm:
Some see the church as an organization that abuses people or has some political agenda. This is certainly a different picture than what Jesus drew for His disciples when He described a church that would “prevail against the gates of hell and become hope for the world.” How we view the church certainly impacts our relationship or desire to be a part of it. If we view it as a community gathering to make Jesus known and present in our world, and offering us the opportunity for our faith to make an impact, it might be seen in a different perspective than we have considered before.

Enormous confusion exists today concerning the Bible's teaching about the future. Every natural or national disaster has its biblical scholar stating the event as the fulfillment of prophecy. As the world deals with the COVID-19 outbreak, it has re-energized interest in end-times resources, as people seek answers to the mysteries. The end times and Revelation according to Hollywood and bestselling fiction are not the End Times revealed in the Bible.
Often the topic is sensationalized by some, or simply ignored or denied as part of the Christian testimony by others.
In God's Time offers an alternative to these two poles in the debate, an alternative that is at once faithful and sane, readable and scholarly. Author Craig C. Hill encourages Christians both to take seriously and to think sensibly about the hope of God's ultimate victory. His new book includes chapters on the nature of the Bible, the history of prophecy, the meaning of apocalyptic writings, the interpretation of Daniel and Revelation, the expectations of Jesus, and the hopes of the early Christians. It also includes an appendix ("Not Left Behind") on the subject of the rapture.
