We come now to the final installment in this Family Reunion series. We have traveled through the book of Genesis and watched our spiritual ancestors navigate their family troubles. We have seen abuse, favoritism, deceit, and sibling rivalry in many forms, and now we come to the emotional climax of the saga: Joseph forgives his brothers.
After spending these past thirteen weeks watching parents, children, and siblings misbehaving and treating each other badly, we finally see someone acting with grace and mercy. We see Joseph acting as God would have him (and us) act. We see reconciliation!
The truth is, when we look back on these Genesis stories, most of them actually end with some form of reconciliation. Isaac and Ishmael stand together to bury their father Abraham (Genesis 25:9). Leah and Rachel speak with one voice as they pledge their loyalty to Jacob (31:14). Esau forgives Jacob (33:4) and together they bury Isaac (35:29).
The arc of God's story moves towards reconciliation and peace. Although our human nature pulls us toward rivalry and favoritism. God is always at work within us and beyond us to deepen our love and forgiveness. The question for us is: Will we participate in the reconciling work of God? Will we choose to play favorites and to deepen the rivalries within our families and within the family of God? Or will we join in the work that God is doing to create one human family grounded in love and peace?

Sermon Series August 23 & 30
|
This year has been one of the most disruptive experiences for us. Many of the "givens" in life became fragile and unpredictable. We discovered how vulnerable we can be to an unseen virus. Injustice, long kept in power, is being confronted. What lessons in life, faith, and love can we learn from our 2020 experiences?

The Davidic kingship ended with the Babylonian Exile. The expectation grew that an "anointed one" (a "Messiah") would arise who would re-establish the Davidic kingdom.
The destruction of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah raised the question of the permanence of the people's covenant with God. Prophets such as Jeremiah and Ezekiel foretold a renewal of the covenant in a gloriously restored Israel.
Increasingly, the prophets also foretold of a renewed world in which God's righteousness would reign over all people. In this and other ways, they thought from the perspective of faith about the future.
In the work of the later prophets of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), we witness the beginnings of apocalyptic thought. A future is imagined that could be brought about only by an extraordinary act of God.
