Soul Food: Dirty Hands & Clean Hearts
August 29, 2021 Sermon
Mark 7:1-23
|

The book of Proverbs is part of the biblical collection of Wisdom literature. Some of the Wisdom literature in the Bible is presented in the form of poetry, song, or story, but the book of Proverbs is a collection of ittle pearls of wisdom, short words of advice for living a good life. In this chapter of Proverbs, the writer insists that having a good name is worth more than almost anything else in life.
The advice from Proverbs is about making a good name for yourself, building a solid reputation so that when someone hears your name, the person who comes to mind will be someone of excellent character. Be thoughtful and kind, make wise decisions about how you spend your time and resources; be humble; choose for yourself a good community; make generosity your hallmark; fill everything you do with justice. Living life this way, making a good name for yourself, will surely pay off in the end. The sage writes: "One who loves a pure heart and who speaks with grace will have the king for a friend."
You know how the saying goes: "You never get a second chance to make a first impression." An article in Business Insider takes this on with some suggestions for how one might make a great first impression. Among them? "Listen 10x more than you talk." "Shift the spotlight to others." "Choose your words carefully." Good advice: I'm sure the author of Proverbs would agree. Here in chapter 22, the writer is asking us to consider: How do you want to be seen in the world? What mark will your life leave on the lives around you?

CCIW FALL WOMEN RETREAT
September 24-26, 2021
|
After a COVID-19 cancellation in 2020, the 2021 Christian Church in Illinois/Wisconsin Fall Women Retreat returns!
The theme is Inside Out and the keynote speaker will be Vicky Woolridge (wife of former regional minister Scott) from Central Christian Church in Decatur, IL. As in the past, there is flexibility in the length of participation and in housing arrangements at Camp Walter Scott. Throughout the retreat, we will explore our theme with Vicky and scripture from the book of Ester, make crafts, pray for and with one another, and more. The evening will conclude with dinner and a movie and discussion that will allow us to further explore how we connect to our genuine selves in the midst of others' expectations and views of who we are or should be.
For more information, contact Rev. Dr. Beth Rupe, Coordinator CCIW Disciples Women at 309.224.0538 or email bethr@cciwdisciples.org
